Publisher's summary

Rory Miller's Facing Violence: Preparing for the Unexpected includes seven elements that must be addressed to bring self-defense training to something approaching complete. These elements are: legal and ethical implications, violence dynamics, avoidance, counter-ambush, breaking the freeze, the fight itself, and the aftermath. Training that dismisses any of these areas leaves you vulnerable.

A must have read

schools and normal families don't teach us to handle violence. This book sumarize all the types of violence: social and predatory, and the stages for each type.
Men get involved in social violence, women are victims of predatory violence.

A must read!

violence can happen anywhere anytime. ignoring the fact does not make it less true. It is better to prepare and this book is a great tool in doing so.

Beyond the how to

I'm just an average guy who sees the benefits of trying to understand what to do if myself or someone else is in imminent danger. I would like to think I could manage well but doubt, even with some limited training, that my abilities would be anything other than average or worse. That's the truth of it. Few are really prepared for a violent attack. This is a hard and humbling fact. To somewhat better my chances, I've listened to a few instructional how to /what if books on self defense. Unfortunately, these books can be either too clinical or simply unrealistic. 'Sure, that sounds good but would I or could I actually do this or that.' Anyway you get the idea. There are potentially many unintended consequences for acting or inaction. That being said, this author, in my view does a fantastic job in covering multiple aspects of a self defense situation(s). There's detail, humor and potentially grim reality; all of which is put forth in an enjoyable and captivating manor. I plan on listening to it again. Good read ( listen). Highly recommended.

Must read!

Rory Miller's Facing Violence: Preparing for the Unexpected is an invaluable resource that shares a holistic approach to self-defense training. Encompassing seven vital elements—legal and ethical implications, violence dynamics, avoidance, counter-ambush, breaking the freeze, the fight itself, and the aftermath—this book equips you to face any unforeseen circumstance. I gleaned a lot of perspective from this book, emphasizing the importance of addressing all these aspects to safeguard against vulnerability during self-defense situations. I hope I'm never in a situation to need it, and I feel better prepared just in case.

Excellent read for long time martial artist and marksman

I very much enjoyed the practicality and new perspectives I had not considered previous to listening to this book. I spent time growing up doing shotokan, later a decade of jiu jitsu and Muay Thai. I’ve spent a significant time behind the irons as well. This book is thoughtful, grounded and expresses reality.

This should be required reading in high schools!

As a former 75th Army Ranger, police officer and private contractor in Baghdad, this book is outstanding...truly! This information is something I should have been taught growing up. It's vital for young kids to have this knowledge as well as those that have not learned it along the way in life. I Highly recommend this book and can not wait to read his other books on the topic of living in our modern violent world.
