Jason Walker has often wished his life could be a bit less predictable--until a routine day at the zoo ends with Jason suddenly transporting from the hippo tank to a place unlike anything he's ever seen. It’s two months before Amelia’s big audition for the Mystwick School of Musicraft. If she gets in, she will learn to spin music into powerful magic - but her Gran has one last-ditch plan to persuade her out of it: sports camp. A week of softball, sprinting, and sweaty socks isn't exactly Amelia’s idea of a good time - in fact, she's deeply, appallingly unathletic. By the end of day one, she’s puked her guts out in track, gotten a black eye in no-contact flag football, and firmly established herself as the Least Valuable Player at camp.

Story
Twelve-year-old Sophie has never quite fit into her life. She’s skipped multiple grades and doesn’t really connect with the older kids at school, but she’s not comfortable with her family, either. The reason? Sophie’s a Telepath, someone who can read minds. No one knows her secret - at least, that’s what she thinks.... But the day Sophie meets Fitz, a mysterious (and adorable) boy, she learns she’s not alone. He’s a Telepath too, and it turns out the reason she has never felt at home is that, well...she isn’t. Fitz opens Sophie’s eyes to a shocking truth....

Publisher's summary
For centuries, mystical creatures of all description were gathered to a hidden refuge called Fablehaven to prevent their extinction. The sanctuary survives today as one of the last strongholds of true magic in a cynical world. Enchanting? Absolutely. Exciting? You bet. Safe? Well, actually, quite the opposite...
Kendra and her brother Seth have no idea their grandfather is the current caretaker of Fablehaven. Inside the gated woods, ancient laws give relative order among greedy trolls, mischievous satyrs, plotting witches, spiteful imps, and jealous fairies. However, when the rules get broken, an arcane evil is unleashed, forcing Kendra and Seth to face the greatest challenge of their lives. To save her family, Fablehaven, and perhaps the world, Kendra must find the courage to do what she fears most.

There came an elastic aftershock of creaks and groans and then, softly softly, a chinking shower of rubbled cement. Leaves calmed and trunks stood serene. Where, not a minute before, there had been a suburb, there was now only woodland standing amid ruins. There is no warning. No chance to prepare. They arrive in the night: thundering up through the ground, transforming streets and towns into shadowy forest. Buildings are destroyed.

Story
Life in a small town can be pretty boring when everyone avoids you like the plague. But after their father unwittingly sends them to stay with an aunt who’s away on holiday, the Hardscrabble children take off on an adventure that begins in the seedy streets of London and ends in a peculiar sea village where legend has it a monstrous creature lives who is half boy and half animal.
In this wickedly dark, unusual, and compelling novel, Ellen Potter masterfully tells the tale of one deliciously strange family and a secret that changes everything.

When Kara Westfall was six years old, her mother was convicted of the worst of all crimes: Witchcraft. Years later, Kara and her little brother, Taff, are still shunned by the people of their village, who believe that nothing is more evil than magic…except, perhaps, the mysterious forest that covers nearly the entire island. It has many names, this place. Sometimes it is called the Dark Wood, or Sordyr's Realm. But mostly it's called the Thickety.

These are not the mild-mannered maidens of your childhood. These are fallen princesses and fierce women with no recollection of who they are, where they came from, or how they arrived in a mysterious town called Everafter. All they know is that they've been sentenced to a stretch in a half-way house by a malicious judge with an ax to grind. They've been stripped of their freedom, their kingdoms, and their true loves. Magic has been banished in the land of Syhl Shallow for as long as best friends Jax and Callyn can remember. They once loved the stories of the powerful magesmiths and mythical scravers who could conjure fire or control ice, but now they’ve learned that magic only leads to danger: magic is what killed Callyn’s parents, leaving her alone to raise her younger sister. Great story, would have preferre a different read.
Would you listen to Fablehaven, Book 1 again? Why?
Love the story. Read all the books several times in print. Love being to listen to them on the go.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Yes. Me, and my older kids were turned off by the reader. Felt like an adult talking to a two year old.

Horrible narrater
This book is great and it was nearly ruined by the narrator. The tone and voice work were better suited for children's stories. This story is is mildly dark and meant to be scary and often sarcastic in the vein tone wise of the Harry Potter series. The reader does not know the meaning of sarcasm and is all around humorless and there are many funny parts to the story. The voice acting should have been on reading rainbow not in anything past a 1st grade reading level. What were you all thinning when you chose this guy. It is bad enough that the whole series should be rerecorded so others won't have to suffer.

Great Story
What aspect of E. B. Stevens’s performance would you have changed?
Was not a fan of the narration style. Very much geared towards children and had a slightly annoying quality to his intonation.
Any additional comments?
The chapter/book beginning /end Music overlaying the speech was highly annoying.

Great book for the whole family!
Such a sweet story! Just enough adventure and mischief to keep the kids entertained! We listened to this book in the car for about a month. My kids are ages 6 and 4 and we loved it! It might have been better for an older audience but it was very wholesome and not too deep and introspective so they were entertained!

Great story! Bad reader
This reader is just...extra bad. I’m not sure how to explain it. Part of me wants to know what happens next, but most of me is like “Not with this reader.” Yikes. He does ok with character voices, but I kept thinking it felt like a kindergarten teacher’s first time reading see spot run aloud, but way,way longer. It feels jerky and uncomfortable with artificially high tones like every sentence is half exclamatory. No bueno. No more of this reader.

super fun!
i loved this story. as an adult who enjoys clean fantasy, this was a great story. it is a juvenile book, so if you don't like following a couple of kids on their adventure then don't read it. however, i love reading fun books with clean storylines.

Great fantasy series
Well thought out series of relative interpretations with a fantasy world. Shows a wonderful creation of interreaction with a magical world.
