Eye of the Needle, Ken Follett's historical thriller, is a heart-racingly exciting tale about the fate of the war resting in the hands of a master spy, his opponent and one brave woman.

Victory Hangs in the Balance
1944. In the weeks leading up to D-Day the Allies are disguising their invasion plans with elaborate decoy ships and planes. If they can land a force on mainland Europe they will gain the upper hand in a war that has ravaged the world for years, and take the fight to the Nazi menace.

A Cold-Blooded Killer
His weapon is the stiletto, his codename: The Needle. He is Hitler’s prize undercover agent – a ruthless and professional murderer. In England he uncovers the Allies’ D-Day plans but his cover is blown in the process.

A Deadly Chase
Leaving a trail of bodies in his wake, The Needle ruthlessly races to a U-boat waiting to convey him and his critical message to Germany, with MI5 on his tail. But he hasn’t planned for a storm-battered island and the remarkable young woman who lives there . . .

A tense, marvellously detailed suspense thriller based on a solid foundation of fact
An absolutely terrific thriller, so pulse-pounding, so ingenious in its plotting and so frighteningly realistic that you simply cannot stop reading

Most probably one of the best spy books I came across in a long, long time.

Great book

I read the first 2 cathedral books of Ken Follett (1000+ pages). Perhaps I should not have read them back to back, but by a third into the second one I was bored by Follett's repetitive structure of character types, poor character development (for such mighty novels), the theme of downtrodden vs monied mighty (not much has changed from Middle Ages to 2025, mind you), rise to wealth through cunning and against great odds, fall from grace through greed and cruelty, etcetera, etcetera and Mills and Boon love scenes. Having said that, he does have a flair for keeping one riveted on a storyline and so I thought I would try this one out. I was not disappointed that I did. It was captivating and enjoyable. The narrator is excellent (to my non-native ear his German pronunciation seemed convincing, even Hitler had a hint of Hitler every now and then) and he added depth to characters through his tone. Some characters Follett managed to flesh out a little more than in the aforementioned books, but many main characters still remained a sketch, with some history. Still. An enjoyable, riveting listen. Once again his knack of keeping one fascinated to his story is undeniable. Happily I was surprised.

Surprising

I fell in love with this book almost instantly and enjoyed it so much that I wanted to draw it out. But I could not put down the last three hours in particular.

The narrator is outstanding. The locations are evocative. The characters, story and the detail that Follett weaves into it are astounding.

What an ending!
