Publisher's summary

The galaxy burns at Horus' command, and a billion more lives are lost with each passing moment - though it was not always so. Once, the title of Warmaster stood for honour, loyalty and a fierce pride in the strength of the Space Marine Legions. But perhaps by following the myriad lines of destiny and defiance that were already woven around the primarchs and their sons, we may yet come to understand the bitterness that can eat away at even the most steadfast of souls....

More short stories most confusing

Although I love the entire Heresy series. This was my least favorite. Most of short stories dont have enough explanation to know whats going on unless you have happen to read all of the back stories. Even though I have many are still extremely vague and actually some are down right boring. The cover and the title of the book is misleading in that it leads you to believe that this is actually going to be about the emperor and Horus but only one story has anything to do with that. I also am just not a fan of John Banks voice portrayals of many of the characters. I suggest you save this one for paper back and buy a used copy at that.

silly book of short stories

really wish they would label these as books of short stories instead of a title like War without in so that way I do not waste a credit on a book of excerpts from other Horus heresy books.

worth listening to

It's pretty good, some are way better than others. Normal grab bag with the stories. felt like some spoiled a future novel, but it was still good.

Lots of good lil stories

Apart from a few glaring *mis-reads*, the narrators all did a good job. Nice variety of stories & characters & settings. One of the better compilations. I just hate that a lot of the stories I read as stand alone novellas are reprinted in these later Horus Heresy compilations. Means about 1/3rd of the tales were old news. Not that I don't appreciate the performance of them in an audiobook, but in paperback it's a bit of a waste.

Decent Anthology

Like with the anthology stories, they are more filler for the wider conflict, and provide some context for future events. I would say this one has probably some of the best stories so far.
-Lorgar’s Pilgrimage
-Iron Warrior taking control of a Titan
-A Planetary Governor’s resolve

Another lame collection.

Such a sad slog after the awesomeness of Pharos. I guess it’s cool to know how the sanguine came to exist but otherwise what an absolute snoozer of a book

Good world building

I understand why the short story anthologies can be tiring to get through for people, but they add a lot to the setting and some of them are important to the overall story.

Decent

Over all it provides some interesting background context and fills some gaps. Worth the listen but not the most important.
