Publisher's Summary

The end of the world has been avoided - for now. With Miri and her team of extracted heroes still on the run, Mother, the disgraced former head of the British Secret Service, has other ideas....

While Mother retreats to her bunker to plot her next move, Miri, Ben, Safa and Harry travel far into the future to ensure that they have prevented the apocalypse. But what they find just doesn't make sense.

London in 2111 is on the brink of annihilation. What's more, the timelines have been twisted. Folded in on each other. It's hard to keep track of who is where. Or, more accurately, who is when.

The clock is ticking for them all. With nothing left to lose but life itself, our heroes must stop Mother - or die trying.

My Favorite Time-Travel Story

This is the end of an awesome trilogy and is the wrap-up of the best time travel story I've ever read.

It's not often that I'm unable to accurately predict what's going to happen; Extracted, Executed, and Extinct had me thrilled, guessing, and surprised to the very end. Extracted is full of action and adventure. Executed is a crazy, non-stop, action-packed adrenaline rush! Extinct is a rollercoaster ride full of ups, downs, twists, and turns! To make it even better, the characters are so well developed, I've come to think of them as friends

Extinct is not a stand-alone novel. You will want to read Extracted and Executed before reading this one, but your investment of time is well worth it. If you are a techno-thriller fan or Time-Travel aficionado this is a series not to miss!

OMG

Hi,
I have been around here for a long long time.
It's my fault I stopped reviewing books, but after 1100 books, you can run out of words.
Yet, this series is wicked. I really looked forward to this 3rd book. Even then, several times during the audio, I became afraid it would ruin the first two books. NOT!
I literally had to go back several times to listen the last half hour of this one to mentally process the unending twists. Very fulfilling (plot, characters, confusion, reboots.) If you can't keep it straight it gets tough, but never boring.

5 stars.

Outstanding Story – Outstanding Performance

Just finished Extinct.
Every time in venture into the next volume of a loved series I have a little fear inside that my hopes are too high and I will be disappointed. That was not the case here. While Book one of the series is still my favorite, I still have to give book two and three five stars. I look forward to book four.

I have not read/listened to Mr. Haywood’s Zombie books because I’m not a zombie fan. However Time travel is one of my favorite genres and now Mr. Haywood is one of my favorite Authors. Time travel is complicated but he does a good job of explaining the theories of his universe. As with any story the players are most important. Mr. Haywood give depth and emotion, and logic of purpose all characters.

I can’t say enough about Carl Prokopp. He has an amazing talent to inject emotion, timing, range, all the qualities that will suck you into a book and remove the rest of the world. When someone says “Professional Narrator” this is who they are talking about. In all his books he adds another layer of emotion that will stick with you even when you are not listening.

To Mr. Haywood – Please give us more Ben, Safa, Harry, and Emily.
To Mr. Prokopp – Please keep reading. I’m still listening.

Really liked the first two book but...

I enjoyed the first two books of this series but book so thought I woud enjoy this on too. I was wrong. Book 3 was just the same thing over again only with Nazi this time. I MIGHT have liked it more if I hadn't already listened to the first two.

Weak characters, Weaker conclusion (spoilers)

There is no denying that time travel fiction is hard, and certainly harder when you can't diagram how all the timelines are intersecting and converging because you're listening to an audiobook, certainly a disadvantage to the average reader. Despite this, "Extinct" felt like filler until another book. A weak conclusion to an otherwise strong series, if it even is a conclusion.

Previously one of his stronger suits, Haywood's character building stagnates in "Extinct". I think he has fun crafting "real" conversations between his characters, complete with constant misunderstanding, swearing (apparently outlawed in 2111), and long chains of clarification and euphemism. Endearing perhaps in books 1 & 2, but worn out in the face of the apocalypse, like watching The Avengers discuss shawarma while the villain burns the world, because in the end "good always wins", right?

Maybe the exploration of "serious" topics in books 1 & 2 (depression & mental health, sexual abuse, the logistics of saving the world) warranted some opening of the comedic coffers for "Extinct": apparently all there is to do between changing the history of the world is have sex. A Emily-Harry romantic subplot drags the reader through their awkward mornings-after and Emily's schoolgirl maturity towards Harry's lack of outward emotion. We are treated to a real personality transformation of Alpha, and his relationship with Kate, only to be robbed of any real closure. Instead (and I'm not a prude), we get a regularly scheduled commercial break sex scene and ensuing pillow talk.

"Extinct" is not without its merits: we finally see the limits of the time machine and "perma-death" (or so we think), Rea undergoes a fascinating Cretaceous transformation (though she becomes a convenient deus ex machina by book's end), and Harry's explosive return to WW2 in a rushing action sequence.

In the end, I was disappointed that the most powerful plot device, the power to change history, was criminally under-explored. I gave up hope of ever learning anything past the superficial descriptions of the future. Why do kids have tattoos in the future (and men boobs)? Why do people eat insects? Why is real coffee scarce? Is Miri actually Mother? (That's my fan theory). The cliche's overpowered innovative world building that Haywood championed in the previous books. Mother's evil. Miri & the team are good. We get it. Any real potential at some true character development was too frequently interrupted with innocuous banter or a sex scene.

Good Listen

I thought the start of the book was slow and hokey.

The last few chapters more than made up for it.

Great Series

Emotional, thoughtful, mind-bending and Actually Laugh Out Loud. The interaction between the companions really makes it feel your sitting among friends. The soft ribbings to the knife point hard jabs. Great collection of characters with distinct personalities. Haywood takes the time to explore each ones thoughts and actions with equal measure. Couldn't wait to get this listened too and was not disappointed. Wanting more.

What are we supposed to do now?

This trilogy has been the best I’ve listened to, and I’ve got nearly 300 books under my belt. The characters are amazing and I’ll miss them so much. This third instalment is as good as the others and I wasn’t disappointed at all.
I only hope that Mr Haywood takes pity on us and comes back with more.

There Is Life After Extinction After All!

Now I thought that this series actually was extinct after the last book which seemed to tie everything together so well that i thought that the story was done and dusted. RR Haywood who does have form for giving a series longevity obviously thought otherwise. So it was a with a little trepidation that I ordered this one and started listening. Almost straight away though the doubts were cast aside and I was drawn into the deliciously childish banter of Ben, Saffa, Harry and co. The story that Haywood weaves around them is clever and quite captivating without ever taking itself too seriously.

Carl Prekopp is well suited to Haywood's style and captures the characters and the humour with considerable aplomb. He brings the significant number of action scenes to life as the story twists and turns and the two rival groups vie for supremacy.

The book does complete a decent story arc but this time leaves much more open so it's clear that there will be more to come. If you enjoyed the first two books it's very likely you'll enjoy this one with its faster pace and increased levels of action. And if you do enjoy this one too and want more it does look like you'll get your wish!

Powerful, complex and human

This is a stunning end to a fantastic story. The way Haywood imbues his characters with rich, real personalities makes you genuinely care. Congratulations to Carl Prekopp who performs each character, fully developing them and creating strong nuisanced voices.
Only mild conveniences crop up in the plot but could be forgiven as the warmth of the characters drives the story.

Loved it, super fast paced and very exciting

Amazing finale of the trilogy, I loved following the continued story of the core characters, Safa, Ben, Harry et al., and I really enjoyed the development of other characters, especially Alpha. Fast paced, exciting and crazy plot line that hangs together in my mind. If you liked the other two, you will love this.

No where near the previous two books in the series

Loved the first book, the second was more of the same and clearly milking the concept but was an ok listen if ...this one just got trite! I managed to listen to the whole of Extinct but several times I was very close to simply deleting the copy as I got fed up with waffle, filler material and nonsense. Why the author or publisher felt compelled to include detailed sex narratives (that were stereo typical and didn't add to the story line) is beyond me - probably in the hope that this could spice up any future film or TV deal.

I would not recommend this book! Sorry!
