Publisher's summary

Kamau and Melissa’s love was real. But so was her grandfather’s prejudice. In this funny, moving essay, W. Kamau Bell, the host of CNN’s United Shades of America, shares his very personal story of culture clash, family tradition, and racial bias.

When the black comedian first meets the beloved Sicilian grandfather of his Italian American girlfriend, Melissa, the wrong sparks fly. The most important member of her large family shuns Kamau. What follows is a bracing, true account of conflict and patience, in-laws and family heirlooms, as Melissa and Kamau deal with cold shoulders, rejection, and finally resolution.

Everybody Loves Kamau! is part of The Real Thing, a collection of moving, hilarious, and big-hearted essays on the modern realities of friendship, romance, commitment, and love. Each story can be listened to in a single sitting.

W Kamau Bell is Brilliant

Kamau tells a story that is entertaining and captivating. so much so that you don't realize until after that you've learned more that you could have imagined about race, gender difference, and cultural variants.

He's a gifted storyteller.

Success!

It can be difficult to get many moving parts in a short book. Mr. Bell did a phenomenal job of allowing us to respectfully get to know him and his family. It felt genuine and gentle to the spirit of all involved.

Quick, enjoyable, enlightening...

What a fantastic listen; the author has a unique voice, an interesting perspective, and a fabulous delivery. The story doesn't follow the expected beats, and is all the better for it. Highly recommended...

Brilliant, and witty

I love how Kamau narrates his own story, mixing humour and wit, whilst navigating an otherwise sensitive and emotive subject.

Delightful!

It’s 100% true- Everybody Loves Kamau! I thoroughly enjoyed this excellent performance. I really appreciate how W. Kamau Bell shares his personal experiences with racism, dating, what it means to be part of a family. I laughed out loud many times and also found myself thinking about micro and macro racist aggressions well past the time I listened to this recording. Thank you, W. Kamau Bell, for being vulnerable and guiding listeners to do some serious self-examination while also making us guffaw.

Nail on the head

Kamau Bell writes and narrates this story with humor and pain. Ultimately, it’s a story of forgiveness and pride. I enjoyed it so very much. Thank You Kamau!
