  • Summary

  • When she suffered a seizure that saw her hospitalised with a cracked skull and facial injuries, Robyn Lawley started to reassess her future. Australia’s leading plus-size model had always called out body-diversity blind spots, but now wondered whether she could continue working in an industry with such a rigid view of beauty.

So Lawley embarked on Every Body, a journey to redefine physical beauty, in which she looks critically at the #BodyPositvity movement and asks: who does it leave on the margin, and what is a better call to action?

Lawley talks to actress Jameela Jamil (The Good Place) about chronic illness, comedian Bridget Everett about the healing power of laughing, actor Ryan O’Connell (Special) about dating with Cerebral Palsy, actress Dascha Polanco (Orange in the New Black) about how race informs her identity and iconic model Paulina Porizkova about ageing in the fashion industry.

Lawley talks to people thriving in bodies with Tourette’s Syndrome, Down syndrome, mastectomy scars, burn scars and those with bodies who were born different, such as Paralympian Kobie Donovan who competes at just 3’10 tall.

Every Body examines the stories we all carry in – and on – our bodies, providing an inspiring roadmap for how to accept our imperfections and even come to celebrate them.

Please note: contains some strong language and adult themes.

Dear Listener,

What did I learn about myself while giving voice to this story?
"That my voice counts. And how I use that voice matters both internally when I express self-love and externally giving voice to the voiceless. So many of our guests on the podcast have been through so much, more than I can imagine. Listening to their stories, but most importantly their courage and defiance to the status quo, has helped me get through some dark times post-seizure. I've realized through this that my health matters most and that my body is my hero and my ally. We must demand inclusion and representation. And not just for size, but for so many more categories of people who have been left out of mainstream media, including different ethnicities, ages, disabilities, and sex, and chronic health sufferers." – Robyn Lawley, creator of Every Body

Everybody is what we all need

I found this series thought provoking, honest and enriching. After suffering some very serious accidents myself and finding myself in hospital I needed some reassurance. Hearing a wide range of people and their own stories of survival, the good and the bad and stories that weren’t related opened my eyes to how I viewed my body. I loved this series.

Body Neutral

This was exactly what I needed to hear at exactly the right time. It was so inspiring to hear stories from people who truly put their bodies to the limit and came out stronger and full of self love in the end. A great reminder to everyone that beauty is not what we see in magazines and Instagram but in every single person around us. Made me love and appreciate my body for getting me through the things it has, even when I didn't give it the love it deserves.

Enlightening and Life Changing

Couldn't stop listening. All of the photos of Carrie Underwood dominate my news feed. She is always looking perfect and toned. I realize that this is negativity impacting my own body image. I am not heavy but am a foodie and will never be stick thin. The podcast makes me reevaluate how I see myself. I have a pretty tough body for being an insomniac for so many years. My body has been through a lot of emotional trauma and come out fighting! Great podcast!

From a single Mother of 4, fighting an unknown disease, epileptic, student, warrior, abused child, body shamed, body dysmorphic who has struggled my entire 33 years with my weight and eating disorders at extremes, I fucking thank you soooo much!!! Where in the fuck have you been my whole life you beautiful souls! Wow! Thank all of you for further fueling my awakening to the unique beautiful I can start to fully embody!

Inspiring

The sharers of this episode had wounds not only on their skins but in their souls. It is quite inspiring how they rose above their traumatic experiences and let their wounds heal. Scars may have marked their bodies for life, but what is important is how they embraced these scars and how these kept themselves motivated. Very inspiring stories indeed.
