Publisher's Summary

"Unmasked, unsettling, and unforgettable... this will change the landscape of your soul." - Ann Voskamp

"Filled with the raw pain, beauty, mystery, and grace that our hearts were meant for." - Matt Chandler

Prepare yourself for an unvarnished look at the Christian life, told now for the first time. A powerful memoir of finding beauty and friendship through the pain of loss, tragedy, and brokenness, Even in Our Darkness explores what it means to know God and be known by him.

Jack Deere tells the true story of his life growing up near Fort Worth, Texas in the 1950s and the disintegration of his family following his father's suicide. In his mid-20s, Jack would rise to fame and success as a leading scholar, popular speaker, and best-selling author.

But despite being rescued and exalted, Jack would ultimately be crushed in the years that followed. He would lose his son to suicide and his wife to alcoholism. Only then would Jack wrestle with his own addictions, surrender control, and experience true healing.

An authentic story of the Christian life, Even in Our Darkness will serve as your own guide in overcoming life's disappointments and learning to hear God speak in unbelievable ways.

Even in Our Darkness is a must read

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

As I mature there are fewer and fewer books that I feel I can safely recommend to a friend without giving them a disclaimer. Even in Our Darkness is NOT one of those books. Jack has done a remarkable job in opening up and sharing what an authentic Christian life looks like - without all the socially acceptable facades that are so common in most Christian books these days.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jack showed that being a friend of Jesus, even in the midst of difficult life situations is not only possible, it is necessary.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I loved how Jack opened up and shared his struggles and even his failures, and how God walked with him through it all.

Any additional comments?

Jack's writings, his integrity, his teaching, and his example literally transformed who I am, how I think, and how I live. His previous three books, Surprised by the Spirit, Surprised by the Voice of God, and The Beginner's Guide to the Gift of Prophecy are on my list of must read books. Even in Our Darkness has been added to this list. In an age where so many Christians have retreated behind the mask of socially acceptable Christianity, it is so refreshing to hear one of the leading ministers in the Body of Christ lay down the mask and tell it like it is, warts and all. Even in the Darkness is honest, real, and gives hope to anyone who has a desire to know Jesus, to love Jesus and to be a friend of Jesus. God bless you, Jack!

A Sobering reminder...

Jack Deere was a superstar at Dallas Theological Seminary...until he fell out of favor with the powers-that-be and was exiled for embracing the fullness of the Holy Spirit, and particularly the teachings of John Wimber. This is a riveting, unvarnished account of Jack's life, warts and all. There were times that the pain and heartache were palpable as the reader is reminded that the lives behind the men and women who are put on the stage of evangelicalism may be more broken than many to whom they minister. It serves as a sobering reminder that our eyes must be fixed on Christ, the author and the finisher of our faith. Men, even leaders like Jack Deere suffer from the same temptations and challenges as the layman...and in many cases, the source of their pain is largely self-inflicted. I highly recommend this book!

From Heart to Heart

Jack's open heart and disarming candor have touched my heart with truth and tenderness. Truth in Jack's relentless exposure of the issues of his heart which resonates with those in my heart. Tenderness in the freedom of condemnation and the strength of our Father's Love . Very well done.

Wow

Our God is so precious. Thank you Jack for sharing your life with this broken person. Alcoholism has ravaged my life and by the grace of God alone I have not had a drink in 13 years. Jack your honesty has caused me great introspection as I find myself hiding behind other addictive behavior thinking my cloak of religiosity will conceal my thoughts of a shame riddled wasted life. Your book has allowed our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to chip away that hardened exterior. God bless you Jackie Deere.

Beautiful, profound story of suffering and grace

This is a unique book showing the wonder of God's grace without trying in any way to deny the mystery and violence of suffering in a world of sin. It is a must read for every evangelical and charismatic Christian who might be tempted to give into a triumphalist version of the Gospel. The Gospel remains with the cross at its center.

Devastatingly powerful

Biographies and memoirs always have the potential to be the most compelling and most useful tools in motivating a change in one's own life. This was one of the best I have ever "read". In this case hearing the voice of the author who lived the events was all the more powerful.

Awash in gratitude

I wasn’t familiar with Jack Deere or his writings before reading this book, but after chancing on a positive review and having my interest raised by the précis, I decided to purchase.

Deere writes vividly and with great honesty about his family’s life and the shadows cast over it by abuse (sexual and physical), suicide, sexual purity as well as alcohol and substance addiction; painful yet important topics for the church and for society. Some of his most brutal writing, for a Christian author and pastor, comes around his own walk with God and realisations about his pride, selfishness, ego and buried pain though. I found his words, written from a position of maturity and with the hindsight of a life lived, to be deeply insightful and curiously refreshing, particularly when sharing how God used ever moment to draw him to Him.

It is my experience within Christian communities that such levels of honesty around our dealings with life’s darkness is rare and in this Instagram-filtered/FOMO-generation it feels like it is only getting rarer. There is a raw and genuine reality to Jack’s story and the narrative skips by engagingly. I listened to the audiobook version read by the author and loved his narration. Thoroughly recommended.

Written with humility and honesty, challenging everyone seeking fulfillment anywhere other than in Christ alone.
