Het woord euthanasie komt uit het Grieks en betekent goede dood of genadedood. De term kent vanuit de geschiedenis verschillende betekenissen en invullingen. Meestal wordt met euthanasie het volgende bedoeld: het op hun eigen verzoek beëindigen van het leven van patiënten die ondraaglijk en uitzichtloos lijden. In de meeste landen is euthanasie bij wet verboden en wordt het vervolgd als een misdrijf. In enkele landen, waaronder Nederland en België, is euthanasie gelegaliseerd. De Nederlandse euthanasiewet, voluit de Wet toetsing levensbeëindiging op verzoek en hulp bij zelfdoding, werd in 2001 aangenomen.
In zijn hoorcollege behandelt Paul Schnabel de achtergrond en inhoud van deze wet, met aandacht voor de feiten en cijfers en de verschillende vormen van euthanasie.
