To escape her Amish life for just one day, Esther Albrecht puts on Englisher clothing, sneaking off to go to the movies with her friends. That’s when Esther literally bumps into Xavier Carnegie, who gives them invitations to an elite masquerade gala at his parents' mansion.
Xavier's parents are urging him to marry, since they won't let him access his inheritance or hand down their company to him until he does. To his dismay, they invite several other women from the gala along with Esther to their mansion for one week, hoping Xavier will fall in love with one of them.
Xavier and Esther form an instant connection, but Esther's cousin Mordecai asks her to not tell Xavier that she grew up Amish, so she keeps that part of her life secret from him. During the week-long event at the mansion, despite attempts from the other women to get rid of her, Xavier only has eyes for Esther.
Before the gala, Mordecai overheard the Carnegies' financial advisor, Haman, says that he plans to convince the Carnegies' company build a strip mall in Unity, Maine, right next to the Amish community. Haman hates the Amish, and he knows the mall would attract traffic and nosey tourists and destroy their simple way of life--but he convinces the Carnegies that it would boost the town's economy.
Mordecai and the entire Amish community are depending on Esther to gain Xavier's trust and intervene for them, but how can she admit that she has been lying to him without losing his trust?
