Story
This book is an exploration of the wisdom in the Viking Age poem "Havamal", specifically as it relates to the average person who isn't a scholar of Old Norse, or even an enthusiast of Viking culture. This book is for the layman, the average person who simply wants to improve their life using proven advice. The poem "Havamal" is earthy, cynical, stoic, and grim in its depiction of human life. Havamal means “The Words of the High One”. The poem's speaker is none other than Odin, King of the Gods, who has traveled the many worlds seeking power and suffered greatly in his quest.

Modern Norse Paganism is more of a spiritual path than a religion. It is based on pre-Christian Northern European people’s ancient customs, beliefs, worldviews, and folkloric practices. It is also an essential subdivision of the more prominent modern religious movement, which has come to be known as “Heathenism/Heathenry”. People who practice Norse Paganism might sometimes refer to themselves as “Heathens”.

Hear the original tales of Thor, Odin, and Loki, as the Vikings heard them long ago. Enjoy these ancient tales of tragedy, death, glory, and love, with all the gory and mystic details left out of the Hollywood versions. This collection, The Prose Edda, was the first time the Viking myths were assembled and written down in plain prose (before then, they existed only as oral poems). This abridged edition has only removed sections dealing with technical rules for writing poetry in the Viking style, but has included all the myths and legends.

Seeing how it doesn’t have a set doctrine or dogma, there is no way to best practice Norse paganism. There is also no scripture or a “holy book”, which makes it ideal for people who wish to feel free and authentic to themselves while practicing spirituality. The way Norse paganism is practiced vastly varies from region to region, and there is no “correct” way to practice it. However, it still involves adhering to some tenets, customs, and beliefs. This book offers a comprehensive exploration of modern Norse paganism.

A most excellent introduction
Paxson lives up to her reputation in Essential Asatru with honest perspectives and thorough information that doesn't become tedious and exhaustive. She refers to her own book as an introduction, but it really goes above and beyond that in several parts.
I also found Ann Richardson to be one of the most pleasant narrators I've ever heard. Her voice is lovely and she is extremely conversational - by that I mean that it doesn't sound like she's reading from the page, but instead knows the material well enough to sound perfectly natural.
