Publisher's summary

#1 Best-selling Historical Western author Maggie Ryan brings you the first book in The Red Petticoat series.

The Red Petticoat is not just another whorehouse. This is a place for every painted lady to get her happy ending. Madame Jewel and her 'gems' welcome hardworking men to come inside for a home-cooked meal or a few hands of cards. They are invited to listen to a pretty girl sing or watch a show. If a bit of intimate comfort is desired, they are welcome to go upstairs and into the arms of one of the beautiful women wearing the red petticoats. However, refer to its gems as whores and you'll find yourself tossed out into the street.

This story all begins when Lady Juliette Gardner discovers she has been set up and her reputation ruined. She decides to leave England for good and find her way to the goldfields of California with the hopes of creating her dream and possibly striking it rich.

To Gabriel Vasquez, the hard work and isolation of working his claim is the only way to achieve his dream. When he discovers his new partner is a woman, a very beautiful, very stubborn English woman, he has no problem – except for the fact that she refuses to think of her safety. If she is to be his partner, he will have no hesitation teaching her exactly what happens to naughty, cheeky English ladies.

Gabriel and Jewel will discover that life has room for more than one dream and as they settle themselves in Culpepper Cove. This mining town, nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Mountains, will never be the same once Juliette—Madame Jewel—opens The Red Petticoat.

Join award winning author Maggie Ryan as she begins the tale of The Red Petticoat and all of Madame Jewel's precious—but slightly flawed—gems.

Disclaimer: This book contains the spanking of adult women and explicit sexual scenes including anal play, and sex with multiple partners. If any of these offend you, please do not purchase this book.

cute story

Would you consider the audio edition of Jewel's Gems to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the print version, so cannot compare.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Netty - she has spunk and doesn't take anything from anyone..

Have you listened to any of Logan McAllister’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not listened to other Logan McAllister's performances, however, sometimes there was not much infliction in his narration, so it could get quite monotone.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Thwack!!

Fun historical western romance

I enjoyed listening to this book. The narration felt a little flat or monotone at times, but most of the time, it was good. The story felt a little long, it seemed to take forever for her to get to California. I loved Gabe though, and the narrator did an excellent job voicing him and his accent! I wish he had been in more of the book! All in all, it was a fun story, especially if you enjoy a little spanking in your romances! It left me wanting to hear the other books in this series!

Jewel's Gems

Any additional comments?

Even though this is the first book in the series, this is the second in the series that I have listened to. Each book in the series is written by a different author and can be listened to as a standalone. I enjoyed listening to how the Red Petticoat Saloon series started.

A feisty determined heroine, a strong dominant hero, a bit of romance, a little adventure and some steamy scenes all wrapped up in an entertaining story.

This series is a bit different than the normal historical westerns that I have listened to before. I requested this book for review and while I am not into spanking and I could have done without it, I enjoyed this story much more than another of her stories I recently listened too. Don't get me wrong a little bit of spanking is one thing but one of the spankings in this story bordered on abuse to me. The standing in the corner was just humiliation. If you do not like books with dominant males and spankings than this is not the book for you.

Don't get the wrong impression, Juliette becomes/is an independent, strong and smart woman. She just doesn't always think things through first. Which gets her into a bit of trouble. She meets her match in Gabriel. He is determined to keep her out of trouble and teach her to think first and act second. If she doesn't listen then he's going to teach her a lesson she won't forget.

I liked that there was enough time spent on Juliette's backstory to get a clear picture of her but at the same time I wish she and Gabriel and met sooner and had had more time to develop their relationship.

Logan McAllister did a really good job with the narration. Nice voice. Easy to listen to for long periods of time. Clearly spoken. Nice even pace to the narration. Great character voices and accents. He made the characters and the story come to life. Very enjoyable

Repeated line chapter 14 & 18.

Quick, fun read

Would you try another book from Maggie Ryan and/or Logan McAllister?

I will.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

For the most part, I enjoyed the story and with any romance novel there will be embellishments to match the story line. Some of the content did not match the time portrayed and that was a little difficult to grasp while listening. It is implausible that family members would be so willing/ quick to accept the fall from grace a Lady had taken, let alone the intent to start a brothel. More character cultivation would need to be given, rather than blind acceptance.

What three words best describe Logan McAllister’s voice?

At times robotic. While McAllister did a good job with all the voices, many of the passages were read witha robotic clipped tone rather than smooth flow.

Could you see Jewel's Gems being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

No...though Lifetime might do something.

Maggie does it again kudos, hot and fun.

Loved this book listened to it in one go I couldn't stop listening.
I've listened to one other book narrated by Logan McAllister and at the time I didn't care for it, I couldn't figure out why at the time. Now stay with me folks. I now think it was because it was a male voice and it threw me off. This time I enjoyed his reading a lot more. He brought the story to life for me.
The story was hot, fun and different. Maggie Ryan is one of my favorite spanking authors.
