Welcome to Historic Boston: Beacon Hill, a walking tour of one of Boston’s best known but least explored neighborhoods. In episode 5, we will walk the South Slope of Beacon Hill, which was the primary African American neighborhood in Boston from the late 18th century until after the Civil War. We will discuss the story of this vibrant community, its impact on the anti-slavery movement, and how it would pioneer civil rights in the 19th century. The key sites we will see include: the Rebecca Lee Crumpler house, the homes at 3-10 Smith Court, the African Meeting House, The Abiel Smith School, and the George Middleton house.
