Publisher's Summary

Ty Wilcox doesn’t really believe in superheroes. Then one is murdered right in front of him.

Ty is just a normal guy trying to do his best. He’s single, stuck in a dead-end job with the most hateful boss in the universe, and struggling under a mountain of debt. When he witnesses an impossible battle between two superpowered people, every instinct he has tells him to run. Instead, he becomes the owner of a device that can change his life in ways he can barely imagine. All he has to do is survive for long enough to learn how to use it.

Warning and minor spoilers: Enhancer is a book intended for mature listeners ages 18 years and older. It describes sex, violence, and nudity. It includes light gamelit elements, occasional bad language, and is set in a cyberpunk alternate future. Within its pages, you will find attempted murders, actual murder, home invasions, kidnapping, fights, betrayals, destruction of property, random deaths that can be considered self-defense, a really malevolent boss who treats Ty very badly, and a monstrous bad guy who treats him even worse. Most importantly, you will find gorgeous superheroes and beastkin beauties who are comfortable with unconventional, polyamorous, harem relationships, and there are waffles on offer, as well.

Listen at your own risk.

Light and entertaining series starter

A down on his luck young man stumbles his way into superpowers and is thrown into a world of superheroes, villains and a chance to live out a life he only ever dreamt of. A mix of wish fulfillment and Superhero/LitRPG genres come together in a light and entertaining first chapter in a new series.

Ty Wilcox is stuck in a dead end job with a boss who incessantly tries to ruin his day to day life and a never-ending mountain of debt to pay off. A typical crappy day ends with him getting off of work late and coming across a battle between super-powered humans. He ends up becoming one of these super powered individuals and has to figure out what he wants to do with his new found powers. The shenanigans he gets up to after this is generally entertaining and has some fun set pieces.

There are a few negatives that came up including some instant attraction/love which is explained, but doesn't let the reader care about the relationships initially. Also the end I wish did more to set up a future big bad instead of delaying that, and kind of just stalling the current conflict to the second book when it could have easily been resolved in this book.

The narration by is very good and I thought Chris Graves did a wonderful job throughout. He has some great unique voices and delivery. I look forward to hearing more of his work in the future.

A light and entertaining read that will entertain fans of the genres this taps into, and hopefully can fully flesh out the world and its characters in future books.

Enhancer Stats

Take Away- Enhancer was a fun and perhaps simplistic take on the superhero genre. While I did enjoy it, I am still uncertain whether I will read the next one. (3.5 stars)

Stats:

Plot- The plot was perhaps simple and often utilized overly stereotypical and contrived reasons to advance though it did manage to keep my attention. On the whole it was slightly below average. (2.5 stars)

Characters - The Characters were fun if somewhat two-dimensional particularly when it came to romance. However, the book simply may have been too short for them to truly develop. Additionally, the characters will often make decisions that are illogical and frustrating which further reduces their complexity. (3 stars)

Storytelling – The author's style is often simplistic, lacking in detail. The overall feel is that of a new author that will likely improve. At the same time, Kane’s imagination and pace keep the story moving forward and fun. (3.5 stars)

World Building – Enhancer is set in a vibrant and interesting near future world. Kane, is able to keep the setting relatable while making things like body modification and human enhancement seem to fit in perfectly. (4 stars)

Magic System- This book takes contains an interesting and enjoyable take on superpowers, their origin, and the human potential for enhancement. (4 stars)

Morality rating- Enhancer contains threesomes, explicit sex, language, and superhero violence, and torture.

A well-written story!

This story is definitely worth the time it takes to listen .
The situations used by the author to build the storyline are quite relatable. Though adult situations were described, they were tastefully done. An enjoyable audiobook that I would recommend for ages 17 and older. I’ve heard several books of the same gender where the author, in my opinion, took to much time lay groundwork for their book before any action took place. Not so with “The Enhancer”!
I was given this audiobook to listen to for free, and I give my honest opinion freely.

Really

I enjoyed the book all the way up until the end. I'm sorry, but nobody in their right mind would do what the MCs have done.

SPOILER

If you literally hear your enemy call for someone to come get him after you defeated him. why would you just sit around until it happened, and act surprised when it does. that was a very poor way to set up a book 2.

so 4 stars for that.

very good book you should buy

a bit of a variation on the unwanted harem story line. with an actual plot to hiod it up. future books could fall to the same problems as others like it, but this book is at least a story first, and a wish fulfillment fantasy second.

3.5 stars - Rounded up for great narration

I want to begin by saying that I enjoyed Enhancer. It is entertaining, well-written, and the narrator gave an excellent performance. The book really does feel like a (male) nerd's fantasy.

I was a little disappointed with the end, which does not feel like a conclusive end to the book. I realize that it can be very hard in series to simultaneously wrap each book up and to provide continuity. When I finished 'Enhancer,' I definitely didn't feel like any of the major plot points had been resolved.

Enjoyable light listen! Looking forward to more.

I had a great time listening to this book! If you are not expecting an epic novel with ground-breaking ideas then you won't be disappointed. If you're concerned about the warning (re: sexual content) it's actually pretty tame and really easy to skip forward the 30 seconds to 1 minute or so the 3-4 scenes that contain said content.

What did I enjoy about this book? It was a light listen, i.e., it was entertaining to listen to without having to think too hard about. The world and powers concepts were interesting and world background was hinted at just enough to give you some idea of the character's environments. Strangely (maybe?), I would have been interested in hearing about more interactions of Ty at work! I felt like there could have been some more fun interactions during that time.

I feel like a little more detail could have helped enhance (hah) this book a bit more but, for what it is, it was overall an enjoyable listen and I am looking forward to hearing book 2.

Narration by Chris Graves was excellent! I have no complaints; great performance and character voicing all around. I would not hesitate to listen to more works by Chris Graves.

Great start to a new series!

My heart went out to Ty, our erstwhile super-hero. He had a loathsome job with a loathsome boss so when good things happened to him, I cheered! He was the most unlikely of likely superheroes though.

I loved the world building and seriously enjoyed the story. Which is why the ending...made no sense!!! I see how the ending set up for book two, but seriously!! After all they went through, Ty and the other superhero Tempest, are not prepared for a rescue? I mean, the bad guy radioed someone and said "Come and get me." Ugh.

The narrator was seriously good! Fantasy books have more challenges than straight drama's (IMO) and the narration for this book made the characters jump off the pages!

I wasn't crazy about the ending but I am seriously ready for book two!

a fun and entertaining listen

I rather quite enjoyed this book. I thought it was very entertaining and well narrated. The characters were interesting and there was plenty of action. It wasn't quite as orgy focused as many other gamelit harem stories. This wasn't a complex and deep story, but I wasn't expecting one either. I think, like many books in this genre, require you to suspend your disbelief and set your expectations at a reasonable level. I mean, you don't go to an action movie expecting an Oscar-worthy drama experience. I'm definitely looking forward to another book in this series.

Superhero story with my favorite power...

I went into this book expecting it would be the recent trend of superhero and/or LitRPG harem books with a loser main character who gets the ability to strengthen the people (read: beautiful women) around him and ends up just doing whatever they say and getting alternately praised and teased/insulted by them. And some of that is true here! Buuut, luckily not all of it. The main character is a bit more appealing than many others in similar stories mainly in that: he is not a total idiot! Surprisingly rare in these genres. He also wants to take action, and uses his abilities to allow himself to, rather than just hiding behind more effective compatriots. I was happy that the author didn't overly focus on the sexual content- it was a comparatively small percentage of the work, and less explicit than others. Personally, I want the focus of a fantasy/LitRPG/superhero/scifi novel to be the plot and characters- sex is fine if it adds to either, but it shouldn't occupy so much time that the other factors take a backseat. I enjoyed the powers and look forward to meeting more heroes and villains and seeing what else the main character can do with his power!

There were many moments in the book that matched up fully with similar books- little stood out as unique. There were no twists or surprises. Maybe in future books they'll surprise me, but the shadowy villain seems painfully obvious at this point. Sometimes the protagonist fell into a part of the genre that gets grating, repeating "Blahblah couldn't believe that only 3 days before his life was so bad but now it was so good/different". This is fine once in a while but a dozen times leads to eyerolls.

Overall, if you like superhero books, I think this one is worth your credit. If you enjoyed Tamer: King of Dinosaurs and The Builder's Sword, this is in that area, though I'd rate it as a better than the latter and on par or superior than the former. I'll certainly be reading book 2, which hopefully is on its way!

Excellent start for a new series!

About the story; This is the first book of a series, so we get to meet the main character, meet some of the villains and friendlies. I read the book before I listened to the audible narrative and I recommend a look over at Kindle for the more elaborate story reviews. In short; A regular young man stumbles on to a street fight and gets partnered with an electronic wrist device by accident. This single action turns his world upside down...some for good, like suddenly he's gained the interest of some gorgeous superpowered women...but some for the bad too, because the bad guys are now highly interested in him or more, his device, too... And the battle between good and bad commences! All the wile our MC starts finding his role and his way in this new reality that is now his life. Although I have to admit that the idea of " regular guy meets gorgeous superwomen" isn't something I can call original, the story itself, the situation, the path to be taken...that is...and in my personal opinion, I like the way this series starts off! The narrative, as told by Chris Graves is easy to follow, very well articulated and has plenty of emotion in the voices. Although Graves alone does all the voices, I found it easy to accept a bit further into the narrative, like someone telling a good campfire story...well if those stories take 7+ hours! I do believe reading the story first helps, but it isn't absolutely necessary. Hope to see more future installments!
