Publisher's summary

They only know their enemy as Accursed.

When Roan agrees to join the Serpents on a heist in the city of Esmeraldi, she expects it to go smoothly. Nothing could have been further from the truth. On the run for her life, she'll need to deceive soldiers, generals, and inquisitors of her identity and gender. It's illegal for a woman to be a soldier, after all.

Before long, she dives right into the hands of her pursuers, hiding in plain sight. At least Roan isn't facing down the Accursed in their mountain strongholds, hundreds of kilometers to the north...

In Legacy of Light, you witnessed the story of Ermo as she freed her people from the iron grip of the Holy Empire. In Enemies of Light, witness the war through the eyes of the other side. Not everything is as it seems.

Marvelous continuation of this series

Every bit as good as the first book. A wonderful story, captivating and highly entertaining. This is short, but has miles of entertainment value. I received a free review copy of the audio version of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Intriguing

What a story. Roan is running, but she doesn’t expect such trouble and danger. I thoroughly enjoyed it especially because the narrator made the story come alive. I’m definitely ready for the next book.

Great sequel

I was given this audiobook free to read and review if I wished and it was such a great book, that I even went and bought the e-book on Amazon to support the author.

This book is a sequel to Legacy of Light which is another good book to read from this author, but this one could be read as a stand-alone should you wish to check it out.

This novel shows you that there is always at least 2 sides to every story. Though to be honest there is always 3 sides, there is one side for each person and then there is the truth cause each side always tweaks the story a little (or a lot) to make it seem they are the full victim and did no wrong and it is all th3e other side fault.

Narrator did a good job bringing the book to life and defining each character in their own unique way

One religion, two opposing views leading to war

Let me start out by stating I got a review copy of this book not realizing there was a book 1, but that doesn't change my review as Tavenor does a good job with Enemies of Light to where I didn't realize there was a book 1 until I got to the closing credits of the book. If you like stories of the main character being led by fate/destiny to where they seemingly fall into the situation due to reasons out of their control, then this is a story for you. I can also see some inspiration possibly taken from the concept of the Protestant Reformation in how they have a "Holy Empire" at war with a nation that appears to hold similar religious beliefs, but both sides view the other as being heretics. I will say I am wanting to go back and listen/read book 1 as well as I can't wait to experience book 3.

And the Story Continues

This is the second book of The Compendium and is just as enjoyable as Book 1, Legacy of Light. Full of adventure, suspense, and intrigue, it kept me listening long after I should have been doing other things. It tells the story of Roan who through misadventure finds herself in a situation totally out of her control. This book will appeal to readers of fantasy and adventure.

Great Listen

Okay now I am a little mad, Jump off a cliff much? But on to the main point, the author wrote a good story and the narrator did an awesome job. In this book you get the viewpoint that is opposite of the one in Legacy of Light. They do both come together during a battle but that is where the story ends. I would hate to live somewhere that will not let women serve in the military, death comes to those who try. Granted she could have died like the others who were with her in the palace, but I think she is going on to grander things I guess we shall see. I am looking forward to the next book.

A Meaningful Double-Take On Tropes

In another deep and meaningful exploration of what it means to be sentient and what it means to be valid in a fantasy setting, this time Tavenor takes on the Chosen One trope, turns it on its head, and rewrites all your expectations. It's a lovely story from a series I'm really coming to enjoy, and the perfect thing for the days we live in!

Honest review

Honest review for audiobook from Storyoriginapp.com.

Good continuation of the story. Author kept my interest, and narrator kept characters distinct and was able to keep the storyline alive and not monotonous.

Great second book

This is the third book i have read/listened to by this author. I’ve listened to book 1 of this series. I like how the beginning of the chapters give us a quick insight into the thoughts of the Daughter of Light through her journal excerpts. The main story is from the view of Roan, a young girl who finds herself in quite a predicament. She winds up involved in the war with the Accursed. It’s interesting seeing this side of the events of the war and the interactions of both sides when they finally meet.

This is the second book I have listened to by this narrator ( Ali’s Nicole ) 4/5 for her narration. 3.5/5 for the production since the audio quality is not great. There is intermittent noise in the background that varies in volume.
She uses voices to help differentiate the characters and adds expression and emotion. Her style seems better in this book and is a bit more performing than reading. She uses a similar cadence throughout however. Her diction is clear.

There are no explicit sex scenes, excessive violence or swearing.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and voluntarily left this unbiased review.
