The protests in front of the embassy aren't what they seem....

In the dark, primal jungles of the Congo Basin, something is ravaging the local population. When protests turn violent in front of the US embassy in Kinshasa, only the foreign policy experts paid attention. Civil war erupts, and people rip each other apart in the streets of the African capital.

To avert disaster and preserve its self-image, an overwhelmed State Department dispatches a team of elite counterterrorism agents to bring their besieged people back alive. Mark Steele, a young agent within the division, and his team of gritty operatives are used to trudging through the worst society has to offer, all while operating from the shadows. But Steele's team is plunging headlong into a maelstrom of death so much worse than rebels in the streets.

A highly contagious microbe is spreading unchecked, killing everyone in its wake only to bring them back again as the ravenous undead. Only a lone CDC virologist understands the extent of the outbreak at hand. He cowers among the embassy staff praying for extraction from the hands of death, fearing his part to play in the epidemic.

Follow this harrowing tale of survival, duty, love and horror as the living dead bring the world to its knees. The first installment of an epic series, End Time starts as a slow burn that turns into a breakneck-paced struggle for survival. Greene does an excellent job of depicting individual stories within the larger scope of the global epidemic. Enter the End Time.

WHAT A FIND! RIVETING!!

For the past several months I have been in a Zombie Apocalypse frenzy... Reading tons of reviews in solely the zombie genre, which has given me insight into some of what to expect from the books/series content. Only then, do I carefully choose what appears to be the best of the best as per multiple peer and editorial audible/amazon reviews. So, it goes without saying, when I lucked upon Greene's trilogy: "The End Time Saga" I was enthralled, and immediately hooked to this very intelligent, exciting, supremely well written, and narrated series.

Steele is like many of the other main (male) protagonists I have encountered in a lot of the very exceptional apocalypse books I have listened to on audible. That is, Steele (like all of us) is an imperfect human being, and because of unfathomable circumstances, is quickly humbled by his own human limitations. Hard to swallow for a tough, hardened, military guy such as himself. Prior to the apocalypse, Steele was nothing less than a "bad a- -", and able to take down just about anyone. Initially, it is incredibly dumbfounding to him that there is actually something(s) in his hemisphere which he cannot take down. Especially considering all of his superb, well honed, physical discipline and military training. Only when he comes to fully accept he is not infallible, is he able to start seriously using his head to evaluate exactly how to best go about (if indeed, possible) terminating whatever infection/plague is turning people into insane, human eating zombies.

Eventually, he also realizes that all people who are unturned are not necessarily his allies, and that (sadly) it is impossible to do what he has trained much of his life for... saving many innocent lives. Only then, does he reluctantly conclude his main objective, quest and priority has got to be saving the lives of himself, and the one person who truly inspires him to keep fighting at all costs... his rock, and the love of his life, girlfriend, Gwen. Once he accepts it is now everyman for himself, with a good dose of vigilante justice mixed in, is he able to untether his conscience and realize it is literally the survival of the fittest (and/or luckiest) for those who are able to get in and fight the good fight, if only for one more day!

Onto book #2 in this riveting series! "HOOYAH!!!"

meh

Zombies, yay. Calling a Latino family, "Tacos" and a black man, "Ribs"...not so much. Some exciting action but crumbles into gun porn and chest beating.

Outstanding!!!

I had the opportunity to read End Time and loved it, so, I ordered the audio book. The audio adds a whole new dimension to Daniel Greene’s fantastic story of an apocalyptic outbreak of a DEADly virus. The audio book pulls you into a world of action, gore, love and despair. The intensity is heightened as Keith Szarabajka does a masterful job narrating this story. I would highly recommend the book as well as the audio of all of Daniel Greene’s End Time Series novels. One thing for sure, you will not be disappointed as each book leaves you wanting more. I have already pre-ordered the next two audio books in this action-packed series. Can’t wait!!!!

How does this have 4 stars?

There is always some element of suspending disbelief in books like this, however it’s usually saved by strong characters that you can cheer for. Not in this book! None of the characters were even likable, and by the time I started rooting for the zombies I knew I had to quit. The dr was a self absorbed arrogant jerk, the special agent was just a generic tough guy, and the girl was stupid enough to worry about her shoes while running from zombies. Every single one of them refused to believe or understand what was happening even when confronted with zombies eating people right in front of them, and continually agonized over the legal/social ramifications of shooting them.

Oh, and let’s not forget the pointless flashback of the warlord (temporary side character) ordering his men to rape a woman in front of her husband, then said warlord raping the man’s little girl after kneecapping him with a baseball bat … we needed this info, why?!

Add in the gratuitous info dumps about how the agents are trained to shoot, or what other military branches think about them, in the middle of a freaking fire fight, and I just could not keep going with it. *insert infinite face palm emojis* so glad I didn’t waste more time on this and will DNF this series.

Weak Females Ruined this

I really loved the story. Great characters and sadness and relatability. However... that Gwen is an insipid shallow brain damaged idiot. I couldn't be more offended by a female character if reread Twilight.😐. I don't know if I can suffer through more books knowing she hasn't been eaten yet. Narrator was great! Plot nail biting, but c'mon. The women in this book are useless and shallow. They have no substance...at all. It's a shame really.

New fan!

There were times when you want to smack some characters or laugh with them or cry at their loss. This is not the standard book that makes everyone perfect. I enjoyed how human each character becomes. I am immediately moving to the next. The narration was also superior. Not overdone but each character was defined.

Slow burn leads to a flaming inferno

End Time is a fresh take on what what is becoming a very crowded and sometimes stale genre. Daniel Greene’s descriptive imagery and emotional writing combined with a captivating story ensure that it doesn’t become the later. The main protagonist of this series, Mark Steele, isn’t your typical hero. While his physical prowess and cool under pressure demeanor ensure that he’s always ready for a fight, he also introduces flaws that I hope Daniel explores more as the series goes on. Luckily, Mark has a great group of supporting characters helping him navigate through the now wasteland of Washington DC including his girlfriend Gwen. Daniel does such an amazing job when writing through the eyes of Gwen, its almost as if I know her. Not to be completely shadowed by this power couple, Mark’s team of counterterrorism agents, including one of my favorites Jarl, hold their own in this new world. Just after you’ve been introduced to all these characters, youre thrown into a bloody action packed thriller leading to an ending that left me ready and excited for whats next.

The narration by Keith Szarabajka is just about perfect for Daniel’s story. He reads with a blend of seriousness, somberness, and when required, comedy. In what could be my only real criticism, there are several times when Keith is reading for some of the female characters, it lead me to laugh, even if that wasn’t Daniel’s intention. Thankfully, the few times that did happen, the dialog was quick to bring me back to the situation at hand, and didn't distract me from overall story being told.

Just Amazing!

This book and the following books after it are all amazing and they will keep you listening chapter by chapter wanting and waiting to hear what happens. I will say in the beginning 1/3 of the book it’s slow but all of a sudden everything picks up and you are enthralled by the story. The Author is a great writer and he picked great narrator. I highly recommend this book and the other books after this. I can’t wait to see what else he comes out with in his next books in the series!

Great start to this trilogy!

I will say this story starts a little slow for me, he builds the back story and the characters first so you know who you are dealing with.

It starts from the initial outbreak where no one knows what’s going on and we watch while people try to figure out this new threat. Our hero is flawed and imperfect which is something I happen to prefer in a story like this.

Faced with this type of situation people won’t always act in the best manner, they won’t always act with thought, sometimes there no time to think. What we do or don’t do isn’t always something we’re proud of later, but that just makes it a very human reaction. These characters act in a normal, flawed and all too human manner, one that sometimes makes you wanna scream at them.

We also see the government in this one, something not always represented in books of this nature and sadly, I see this being a fairly likely response. They aren’t on the same page, some are more worried about voters responses than the very real threat they face.

Like I said it started a little slowly, but as the story goes the pace picks up then suddenly... the end. It leaves you wanting so much more. I’m so glad the next books are coming out on audible so closely to this one. The narrator does a great job, adding even more to the story.

If you like PA/Zombie novels this is a great choice!
