Den tamme kat Røde er blevet medlem af Tordenklanen – en af de fire klaner af vilde katte, som har delt skoven op mellem sig. Her er han blevet uddannet som kriger og har fået navnet Ildhjerte.
Efter den ødelæggende skovbrand, som vi hørte om i Uvejret kommer, står Ildhjerte i spidsen for genopbygningen af Tordenklanens lejr.
Alt ånder tilsyneladende fred og ro, men i skoven lurer der mange farer. Ildhjertes gamle fjende Tigerklo har taget magten i Skyggeklanen. En anden fjende, Leopardpels, er blevet anfører i Flodklanen og ønsker kun at stjæle noget af Tordenklanens land. Samtidig går der rygter om, at der er set vilde hunde i skoven.
Tordenklanens anfører, Blåstjerne, tror, at kattenes forfædre i Stjerneklanen har overladt Tordenklanens katte til sig selv. Men kan det virkelig være rigtigt?

Serien på seks bøger om Krigerkattene følger fire klaner af vilde katte. I centrum for begivenhederne står tamkatten Røde, som bliver optaget i Tordenklanen og uddannet som kriger med navnet Ildhjerte.
