I’m not taking this for granted.

A well-researched and updated material here, I’m looking forward to the future works of Jonathan Costas. He writes incredibly that any reader will be able to relate well with his works.

Suspicious 5 Star Reviews

The information in this audiobook is extremely oversimplified.

Only after I listened to it, did I actually look at the reviews and realized most of them appear to be fake. Take a look at the 15 or so reviews between 6/26/21 and 7/1/21 - all of those reviewers also reviewed the exact same other books - Managing Successful Rental Properties, Deep Sleep Hypnosis, Learn French and Spanish, Kids Keto Lunch Break, etc. So, yeah.

The only review that I actually believe is the one on 7/16/19. (You can’t see the review dates on the Audible app, you have to login online to see them.)

I then also realized there isn’t any information about the author to provide credibility to his knowledge on the subject.

It comes across as a research paper written by a college student who was assigned to write about a topic they have no personal experience with. It’s basically a bunch of paragraphs from various online articles, cut and pasted together.

It lists many of the obvious types of abuse, and states that going through this list will make it “easy to identify” if you are in an emotionally abusive relationship. And once you identify that you are, then you can simply take the steps to get out. His advice basically comes across as, “If you’re being abused, tell them to stop, leave the relationship, report it to a supervisor, or call the police. Problem solved.”

Other audiobooks I’ve listened to on the subject are written by someone who has counseled victims, were victims, or both. As the author neglects to address the complex reality of emotional/psychological abuse, I have to assume he has no direct experience in dealing with this type of abuse. I’d definitely pass on this book. There are better ones out there.

Best book I've read on topic

narration is great! this book has been the best I've heard on how to actually recover. I'm over and done with reading books on what is toxic, if your questioning your marriage or relationship with someone... something is wrong. there isn't enough information on how to get out, BUT this book helps a ton.

Very elementary

Extremely elementary in content, organization, and production.
The blunt, two-dimensional characterization of the subject matter is without nuance or shading, and offers no insight into the dynamics of actual human relationships. Appropriate, I suppose, for the very naive adult who reads at about a fifth-grade level, but not for the general reading public.

Gained knowledge on this.

I am pleased how the author of the book speaks with consideration and how the narrator reads with clarity. This isn’t an easy book to listen to because of the sensitivity of the issue. But for all it’s worth, I tried.

Dynamite

This book has been very informative. The reader had a clear and captivating voice. The content was in-debt and concise. It had a wealth a information that broke down each topic for clarity. It has open my eyes to detecting an abuser. Love and appreciate the information. Thanks you.

Very clear

This book is very helpful for people who are still in the “fog” of emotional and psychological abuse. Simple and clear. For survivors. Not for therapists.

review

I truly enjoy listening to this book. I finally understood that what I was going through is not in my head and that I'm not crazy. I also would like to add that the narrator was great. I felt that he was talkin to me in a kind loving and supporting way. Thank you so much for this book

Very insightful

This book was great to give me more insight into the tactics used by narcissists, how they see things, and how they help bring the abuse and crazy making to a deeper understanding. Great listening to anyone who recovers from this kind of abuse, and to anyone in general.

Instructive manual.

An incredible and brief manual for psychological mistreatment. Here is a brief posting with elegantly composed depictions of every technique and strategy of passionate abusers. As I would like to think everybody should peruse this book. Admonished is forearmed."

An intriguing one.

Get ready for an intriguing look inside the brain of somebody ready to concede their blame and look for help. This book is crude, abrasive and some of the time an entirely awkward excursion through the eyes of an abuser.

it's convincing.

I find the book very awakening about emotional manipulation! I've done this myself, and I know this behavior does nothing to foster intimacy and trust. Emotional manipulation can be subtle and leaving you off-balance.

The benefits of learning emotional abuse.

The audiobook cited, “Are you seeing signs of emotional manipulation?” Then begin to set firm boundaries with your partner or associate. It’s so damaging to your self-esteem!

I have never been more convinced.

The thoughts and tips I have listened to are common-sense and attainable. For the most part, every one of them has given me a profound perspective of what kind of people I usually meet and how to relate to them.

Free yourself!

One aspect of emotional manipulation cited is that when you do something for manipulators (which they will never ask directly for), they may just turn around and say they certainly didn’t want or expect you to do anything! Try to make a point of not fighting other people’s battle!

Setting healthy boundaries.

How disgusting of people who take time to scope out the characteristics and vulnerabilities of others falling as victims. Let’s learn from the audiobook on these different types of people and how also not to become one !

I am supporting this.

Manipulator uses charm and overtly supporting others in order to get people to give their trust and loyalty to him/her. The author enlightens us on this kind of people and how not to be easily dissuaded!
