The idea for Emmett Till: Sometimes Good Can Come Out of a Bad Situation came as Rankin covered a number of civil rights stories and couldn't shake the historical relevance in today's political climate. The first line of the book - "Mommy, what's wrong his face?" - sat in the back of Rankin's mind for nearly a year before a trip back home to Mississippi gave her the perfect setting for telling the story in an age-appropriate manner for middle school students.
