Im August 1926 entgleiste bei Leiferde ein Schnellzug infolge eines geplanten Eisenbahnanschlags zweier junger Männer und forderte 24 Todesopfer; ursprünglich war er als Raubüberfall gedacht. Beide Täter stammten aus schwierigen sozialen Verhältnissen der Zwischenkriegszeit, litten unter Perspektivlosigkeit und materieller Not, und wurden trotz öffentlicher Proteste gegen das harte Urteil wegen heimtückischen Mordes zunächst zum Tode verurteilt, später aber zu lebenslanger Haft begnadigt.
