Publisher's summary

According to Sophie the psychic, beautiful Edisto Beach becomes a hotbed of troublemaking spirits every August. But when a visitor dies mysteriously during a beach house party, former big-city detective Callie Morgan and Edisto Beach police chief Mike Seabrook hunt for motives and suspects among the living. With tourists filling the beaches and local business owners anxious to squelch rumors of a murderer on the loose, Callie will need all the help she can get--especially once the killer's attention turns toward her.

Engaging story

I am an Edistonian and I enjoyed both the story and the descriptions of places on the island. I suspect there are a few characters who share things in common with current Edisto natives. My only disappointment was the narrator’s mispronunciation of several things.

good plot needs a better narrator

storyline was good as always from C. Hope Clark. had a great twist for who the murderer was. The narrator was a bit disappointing and stole a bit from the story overall.

On this one, get the book, skip the audio

Listening all the way through was excruciating and even a challenge to complete the audio. After the well-performed Murder in Edisto performed by Pamela Almand, Jenny Jarnagin's performance dragged Hope Clark's writing writing.

The plot is formula detective novel, but well structured, fun to read, and has plenty of suspense. The naivete of acting police chief Mike Seabrook is starting to wear a little thin after the first book, but the storyline holds up.

The challenge in getting through the Audible version is the performance. It's never fun to negatively critique an author or performer, but I was tempted numerous times to return this book.

Jarnagin has a pleasant voice, but one that needs a book with fewer characters. Many of her characters are indistinguishable from one another. This is made extra challenging after the outstanding performance by Almand in the first book. The recording levels vary throughout the performance, almost identifying mid-chapter retakes or a chapter that was likely the first of the next day. That's a technical issue, but sometimes character voice traits are lost between chapters, too.

I'd recommend getting the kindle or print edition of this one. But I definitely recommend getting the book.

Mystery

I loved the story, but was not crazy about the voice of the commentator. She was flat in tone.

Enjoying the series, but .....

My husband and I just bought a house on Edisto Beach so I searched Audible to find books on the area. I am enjoying the series' storyline and plan to listen or read each, but living in Charleston and having family in the Charleston and Lowcountry area since the late 1700s, the mispronounciation of some of the local family names, plant life, departments, etc was maddening to me. I would have enjoyed the narration more if a little research or coaching had been completed with/by the narrator. As the author obviously has first hand knowledge or did her own research, she surely should desire the same consideration of her written words being spoken. Other than that small criticism (and I know if you are not familiar with the Lowcountry, you may not have even noticed) I will continue the series to learn what happens next!

Narrator VERY hard to listen to.

Ok. So I love this series of books. However this narrator was one of the poorest I've listened to. If I hadn't liked the book so well I would have quit listening. All the voices of the characters in the novel ran together in a mishmash that was hard to keep straight . I am used to narrators having very distinct voices for each character and she didn't. Also she tended to be monotonous . Having said that I like this author and this book.
