Publisher's Summary

The Syrian plane disintegrated, evaporating in a gush of silvery smoke, rent through with bright white lightning, and the ejecting pilot's body was blown clear of the fuselage. For an instant it was outlined ahead of David's screen, cruciform in shape with arms and legs thrown wide, the helmet still on the head, and the clothing ballooning in the rush of air.

He chose this life. And it may cost him everything.

From a young age it's clear that David Morgan is 'bird' - a natural pilot, most at home in the air. In the South African Air Force he receives plaudits beyond his years, and even his family begins to accept that David will do anything to stay away from the Morgan billion-dollar business and to keep flying instead.

Following his dream and in pursuit of Debra, a beautiful young Israeli writer, David soon joins the Israeli Defence Force and finds himself caught up in the country's struggles. But when he pays a terrible price for his choices, will he be able to become the man he always hoped - or will he choose to disappear into the skies?

An action-packed thriller from global best seller Wilbur Smith.

Love Wilbur Smith

I love Wilbur Smith, he is a master storyteller. This book was even harsher than most of his. Not for the faint of heart but it did engage me and the characters very real.

May be my favorite

Although I enjoy all of Wilbur Smith's books, this may be my favorite. in addition to the customary action packed scenes, Smith shares immersive visions of Africa.

Wonderful

I first read this book many years ago and enjoyed it then. I rarely go back to a book, But it felt it worthwhile as it was now spoken. How glad I am, the years fell away, and I rediscovered parts of the story long forgotten. Thank you audible for many hours of listening contentment!

Alright I suppose

Not a bad yarn but it's a bit slow and never really takes off. Just came across as a bit aimless. It's well written though and mostly well read in this performance.

Eagle in the Sky

Again from Wilbur Smith a really good story. Lots of action, excitement, romance both in the air in Israel and on safari in South Africa. Kept me listening almost all night.

One for the ladies?

It actually read the book, the old fashioned way, when it came out. I remembered the "punch line" but almost nothing else. I can see why now.
The descriptions of locations and animals are outstanding but I tend to look for more gratuitous sex and violence from a good Wilbur Smith. I also started to feel the descriptions were there to pad out a thin plot on occasion. Some twists and turns and surprises all help and this seemed to have few. Perhaps I am being unfair as, I guess, I must have subconsciously known the story even though I couldn't remember it.
Finally I didn't really like the narration. The actor sounded too young and it sounded like it was being read rather than performed.

Fair to average

A Predictable story as you progress on, seems that you know exactly what's going to happen next.
Definitely Non fiction
I thought it would be better
