a fantastic book

loved it. well written, and well read. both the author and the narrator combine to draw you into their world, where you feel the characters emotions, and become personally invested in many of them

Any resemblance to history is accidental but...

If you could sum up EMPEROR: The Gates of Rome, Book 1 (Unabridged) in three words, what would they be?

Not history, fun.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

There was plenty of suspense and battle scenes are thrilling.

Which scene was your favorite?

Marius was a wonderful character and every scene with him was excellent.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes.

Any additional comments?

Adding Robert Glenister to my list of best ever, along with Martin Jarvis and George Guidel.
The narrator is, in my opinion, the single most important feature of any audible book. I don't think I will listen to any of this series that doesn't have Glenister narration.

My newest addiction

Some time ago i finished most of Bernard Cornwell's books and it was sad because i didn't have any more of these great historic pieces to read. This series will definitely scratch that itch, i think.

A delight

The subjects lead very interesting lives to be sure, but Mr. Iggulden makes reading it a pleasure with his skill and research. And Mr. Glenister allows you to be swallowed up into the story. Thank you to both.

Brings Rome to Life

I enjoyed the story very much. The narrator is probably the best reason to read it. (I enjoyed this narrator in the Cormoran Strike series and clicked on his name to find more books read by him.)

If you like historical fiction, this is a good book for you. Now I’m off to purchase book 2!

to live in Rome

What was it like to live in B.C. Rome. This book gives you the feeling that you are there. Conn puts you in the head of some of the most famous leaders of history. The book is entertaining from start to finish. There are no slow parts, no fillers, no bull. I will be buying the rest of the series.

This being fiction, Conn explains in the end what he did to write the story. I love authors who say something at the end about how and why they write what they write.

I liked the series about Genghis Khan just a slight better, but that is probably because I have always been more interested in China's history then in Rome's. This being the fourth book I have listened to written by CI, I do not believe you can go wrong. So pick which ever history you would like to live in and listen to that.

Un-putdownable

Having read Iggulden's Ghenkis Khan series whilst in Outer Mongolia I see similarities with this series.

The writing is well-paced and well researched and characters are convincing.

I was transported for a couple of days and couldn't put it down.

The narration was excellent and enhanced the experience
