I am in my seasoned sixties - an avid reader since childhood -- audio books came into my life when my eyesight started to go.

"I know Jess B. Simple... We all do!"
Would you listen to Hughes Views of the Blues again? Why?

Yes. And would read it yet again.
I first read about Jess B. Simple nearly forty years ago in the park next to our local library. Out loud, entertaining my babies, I acted out the characters for them. They laughed at me and with me too.

What did you like best about this story?

The simplicity of being authentic and transparent. Truthful and humorous.
Sometimes real life is downright funny. Like a bunion acting up you're when walking the pavements of Harlem.
Humor is a hickey on the head of one who swung first and missed.
There are Jess B. Simples in pubs in Ireland, taverns in England, bars and clubs in every city in America, he can be found sitting on the porches or leaning against a pickup trucks in the deep south.

What about Nap Turner’s performance did you like?

He was quietly effective, curious but not in your face. Asking leading questions, and waiting for an answer.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, I pause it, take care of something serious and come back to it for some relaxing fun time

    Any additional comments?

Loved this book, I have e read them all over the years, I own most of them

    "Love Simple"
If you could sum up Hughes Views of the Blues in three words, what would they be?

    Enjoyable...Funny...Relatable

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jess B. Simple. This character reminds me of my late Uncle Earnest. If I did not know better, I would think that Mr. Hughes was around listening to stories that my Uncle would tell. Mr. Hughes' characters remind you of people that you know or once knew.

    Which scene was your favorite?

There was no scene that stood out more than another. However, the music background while telling the stories was fantastic.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I listen to this mostly while driving. One story at a time was good enough for me. Just did not tell enough stories.

    Any additional comments?

When I ran across this book, I was looking for Langston Hughes "The Best of Simple" This audible was too short. When it was over, I wanted more. I would hope that more of Mr. Hughes could be available for purchase.

    "Awesome!"

Delivered beautifully and with great inflection and style. The narrator Nap Turner did this book much justice.

    "This one is a gem!"

As a general rule, I find background music on audio books distracting but this one is well mixed. The voice is way out front like it should be; the accompanying jazz combo fits well with the narration and subject; and each short story has a different background music track. Very cool.
The Jes B Simple stories themselves are just plain great! I don't know how else to put it.
And to paraphrase an earlier reviewer we all know someone like this.
