Publisher's Summary

A Doll's House is significant for the way it deals with the fate of a married woman at the time who lacked reasonable opportunities for self-fulfillment in a male dominated world. It aroused a great sensation at the time and caused a "storm of outraged controversy" that went beyond the theatre to the world newspapers and society. Take a listen to Ibsen's most notable piece!

    "A Classic"

A Doll's House is one of those books and plays that is sadly overlooked today. It beautifully portraits how people can be constrained in a relationship, playing a part in order to please a partner who doesn't realize it is simply a part.

Nora may seem a Manic Pixie Dream Girl to her bank manager husband, the perfect ornament in his perfect house. However, she is also proud, determined, dedicated and hard working. These are the qualities that get her in trouble, that allow her to come close to solving her troubles herself and, ultimately, that lead her to face the sham that is her marriage. Her husband may seem like a morally upright but he is also shallow, self serving and vain. In the end, all the characters are both noble and severely flawed.

I love how this play can be read on so many level, from a simple, straight forward plot to layers upon layers of symbolism and parallels, and be enjoyable in all.

This audio version is well read (although the text is abridged) and easy to follow. The voices are different enough in pitch and intonation to make the characters easy to recognize and the narrator captures the range of emotions well.

I read all kinds of books, but I have an obsession with paranormal and fantasy at the moment. Sorry about any spelling mistakes/typos.

    "The path to self-discovery"

I alternated from mesmerized to wanting to stop listening and back to mesmerized many times while listening to this play. The writing is excellent, even without seeing it acted on a stage the drama and tension still come through strongly.

Nora is fascinating, she alternated between showing her inner strength and being very malleable to the people around her. It's very interesting to see her going back and forth.

The narration is good, but I did find it a little difficult to keep track of who was speaking at times, this is partially due to it being a play so it's different to listen to compared to a 'normal' book, but greater differences between the character voices would have helped. Otherwise the narration is well done.

    "Good read"
    Any additional comments?

A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen was a good read. This was a good read on the hypocrisy of middle-class marriage. The women have no power to make any changes or their own decisions, this was a good read.
