Publisher's summary

Will adapting to a changing world make one young woman lose touch with where she came from?

Far from the kingdom of Torvald, on the Western Isles near the coast, sea dragons rule the skies. Lila is the daughter of the Raider leader, destined to take his place one day aboard their plundering ships. Her people value only what shiny trinkets they can get their hands on, but she aspires to much more than that: Lila wants the Raiders to become Dragon Mercenaries, dragon riders who help protect merchant fleets and navies from attack. Her father Kasian is skeptical, but a young monk named Danu - with a quest of his own - comes bearing a prophecy claiming that Lila is the lost heir of Roskilde, a born dragon rider.

With Danu’s guidance, Lila finds the unruly dragon she’s destined to bond with - but the mismatched pair soon learn that much more than just their futures is at stake.

Fantastic New Dragon Series

I'm really looking forward to the next in the series! This book was so much fun. It starts with the story of a girl raised by raiders (pirates) and she is driven by a desire to help her village by becoming a dragon raider... She just needs to catch and tame/train a dragon- no big deal, right? The narrator does a phenomenal job with the acting, voices, and overall narration of the story. I would definitely recommend to anyone who loves dragon and fantasy stories.

Great Story

Dragon Raider was a good story with an interesting character that didn't always get what she wanted. I especially love a particular dragon...

The main thing I fault this audiobook for is the narrators editing abilities. There are some words that have obviously been sliced in to correct something and the cut has a completely different tone and pitch witch catches you off guard. If you can look past the fact that this was likely made by a newer narrator, then this is definitely worth a listen.

Fun characters

This is the seventh book I’ve read/listened to by this author and I would listen to another. So far, I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve listened to and look forward to completing each series.
I like how Lila is confident and strong willed, yet not everything comes easy. The interplay between her and Danu is entertaining. Each have their own strengths that somewhat clash with each other. The dragon has a great personality too.

This is the second book I’ve listened to by this narrator ( Jean Ann Douglas ) and she did a wonderful job bringing the story to life, and instilling the personalities of the characters. Her diction and cadence was great, and expression of the story was well done.
Her screech of the dragons did not coincide with the description, but that was the only mildly uncomfortable. There is not much differentiation between Lila or Danu’s voice, so I found myself often having to replay or switch the picture in my mind to visualize the correct character. This is exacerbated by each chapter switching between Lila and Danu’s perspective. The chapter starts off telling us whose perspective we are listening to, but I found I had to purposely focus on this to avoid having an issue with recognizing who was speaking. This made listening less immersive and seamless.

There are no explicit sex scenes, excessive violence or swearing.

Love, Life, and Dragons

Ava Richardson paints a vivid world with words full of magic and mystery.

Lila is a girl on the cusp of being a woman when she finds out that her past redefines her future. Through bravery she fights to find a way to save her people.

My favorite character from this book was the mage's apprentice. If not for his faith, courage, and kindness Lila may have never found out who she truly was.

Jean Ann Douglas does a tremendous job narrating the story. Her voice and storytelling ability fit perfectly with the written word.

I had a lot of fun listening to this story.

Captivating Fantasy/Adventure

Storyline flows well. Has excellent narration style. Definitely an excellent beginning for a trilogy, even though this one could actually be a stand alone novel because of the smoothly written ending of this 1st book
I recommend this book to ages 12 and older.

Awesome Dragon world!

I love the fantastical world of Dragons and magic that this author has created in this story.. There are so many different dragons with all their varying characteristics and abilities.
It is an interesting story around the possible surviving member of a royal family which lends a lot of mystery to the book.It is a fast paced action Dragon indenture. Very enjoyable!

Good storyline, lousy performance

The pace and tenor of the reader is horrible. The way she narrated the noises of the dragons was laughable. The story was entertaining, but slow to develop.
