In Riversend, an isolated rural community afflicted by an endless drought, a young priest does the unthinkable, killing five parishioners before being taken down himself. A year later, accompanied by his own demons from wartime reporting, journalist Martin Scarsden arrives in Riversend. His assignment is to describe how the townspeople are coping. But as Martin meets the locals and hears their version of events, he begins to realize that the accepted wisdom - that the priest was a pedophile whose imminent exposure was the catalyst for the shooting - may be wrong.

Good story but not loving this narrator
I’m sorry to say that I really did not enjoy listening to this narrator. His queen’s English was not the best choice for this Australian crime thriller. The story was good with lots of interesting characters but the narrator distracted me.

Horrible narrator, story is a soap opera
I very much enjoyed the other cop series from this author so was looking forward to this. The story is probably okay but the weird narrative style of the reader is a total turn-off.

enjoyable
initially I hated the narration as it was too "striney" for me, annoyingly so. I did get used to it though and the story took hold of me. I particularly liked the development of the various characters and how the writing continually jumped from scene to scene with different players. it kept me interested as the pot boiled. the author is a very good writer and his description is detailed without being intrusive. I loved how he described two teens of limited cranial capacity as " mouthbreeders"! Very clever and instantly pictured. One author to follow for me which is very rare as I generally dislike Australian authors for some reason. Definitely one to recommend.
