Publisher's Summary

Everyone was dead. Indian raiders massacred the entire wagon train. Only seven-year-old Hardy Collins and three-year-old Betty Sue Powell, managed to survive. With a knife, a faithful stallion, and the survival lessons his father taught him, Hardy must face the challenges of the open prairie as they head west in search of help. Using ingenuity and common sense, Hardy builds shelters, forages for food, and learns to care for Betty Sue. But their journey through this hostile wilderness is being tracked by even more hostile men. And, as he struggles to keep them alive, Hardy realizes that their survival may depend on his ability to go far beyond what his father had been able to teach him.

One of my favorites

This is one of the very best western that Louis L'Amour ever penned. So nice to have a Audible version.

Simply marvellous

Simply marvellous tale.

I read this story when I was quite young and it appealed to me tremendously then, perhaps because of the two children involved. I was thrilled to see the audio version available and I lapped it up like a sumptuous desert. Perfect length, excellent sequence of action, simply wonderful narration that brought the characters to life in a fresh and unforgettable way. Wow wow wow.

For me the only thing I would have changed was to have Hardy pray to God in the midst of some of his greatest challenges. I believe it would have been most appropriate since the story indicates that his father had brought a bible with him and was in the habit of reading to him. Other than that, an outstanding read.

A Good Western Novel

This was one of those hard to stop listening to Audible books. An excellent story of the West. My only problem with this story was the ages of the two main characters. At the age of 7 and 3 they had more survival skills and knowledge than I believe children of that same time would of had. If Louis had made each of them a few years older, or at least Hardy, the story would be more believable.

A Western Thriller

Im writing this on my husband's Audible account; he chose this book for us to listen to on a road trip. I have to say I wasn't thrilled (not a western fan). This was a sometimes harrowing tale of 2 children in the western wilderness and the father who is looking for them. The narrator was great and we were so engrossed, we finished it in our hotel room!

Down the long hills

I loved this story line. To have children survive so long through so much adversity was amazing and shows so much talent the author had for telling a good story.

Great little read

My grandaddy loved Louis and had all his books. As a child I wanted to see what the fuss was about. This is the book I was given to read in 1986 and it's still just as good.

Vintage L'Amour

Louis L'Amour must have spent a fair bit of time in the backwoods. His descriptions of the country, the effects of the weather and the loneliness of the back country are so apposite. Great story, good narration. What is not to like?
