Buried pirate treasure and a wisecracking heroine lead to romance, adventure, and murder in Prohibition-era Long Island!
Wisecracking Jane Teach had pirate blood, a take-charge attitude, and a penchant for sticking her nose in the wrong places. Sober-minded Bill Popple was from one of Long Island's first families, a conservative-minded young man who walked the straight and narrow. When they met it was loathing at first sight, definitely not a match made in heaven. But with six people trying to kill them over a dead bootlegger's lost fortune and a pirate's treasure secretly buried 300 years ago, they both needed each other.
First Bill Popple, the muscular, serious-minded research student, unearths information that makes the odds high in favor of pirate gold being hidden long ago on what is now Hartman's property. Then Jane Teach, the streamlined girl of ready wit, who seems to know more than Bill does about almost everything, suggests that there may be not one treasure but two, the first one part of her ancestor's lost loot, the second a bootlegger's ill-gotten gains. Next Jane and Bill discover a corpse lying on a beach near Oxbow Bay with gold pieces sunk into its eye sockets.
Soon the pair find themselves up to their necks in mystery and dark doings involving the heterogeneous group of strangers who have appeared suddenly in town to wait and watch for…what? From then on Jane and Bill never experience a dull moment.
How they extricate themselves, and at the same time solve two deep mysteries, adds up to an absorbing novel of skullduggery and sudden death in which excitement and romance mount to an increasingly high pitch and culminate in a wholly satisfying climax.

Historia
Faye Longchamp has lost nearly everything, except for her quick mind and a grim determination to keep her ancestral home, Joyeuse, a moldering plantation. When the property taxes rise beyond her means, Faye sets out to save Joyeuse by digging for artifacts on her property and the surrounding national wildlife refuge and selling them on the black market. A tiny bit of that dead glory would pay a year’s taxes, and a big, valuable chunk of the past would save her home forever. But instead of potsherds and arrowheads, she uncovers a woman’s shattered skull, a Jackie Kennedy-style earring nestled against its cheek bone.

Historia
In September 1960, John Steinbeck and his poodle, Charley, embarked on a journey across America, from small towns to growing cities to glorious wilderness oases. Travels with Charley is animated by Steinbeck’s attention to the specific details of the natural world and his sense of how the lives of people are intimately connected to the rhythms of nature—to weather, geography, the cycles of the seasons. His keen ear for the transactions among people is evident, too, as he records the interests and obsessions that preoccupy the Americans he encounters along the way.

The final novel of one of America’s most beloved writers - a tale of degeneration, corruption, and spiritual crisis. A Penguin Classic In awarding John Steinbeck the 1962 Nobel Prize in Literature, the Nobel committee stated that with The Winter of Our Discontent, he had “resumed his position as an independent expounder of the truth, with an unbiased instinct for what is genuinely American". Ethan Allen Hawley, the protagonist of Steinbeck’s last novel, works as a clerk in a grocery store that his family once owned.

The year 1894. The monstrous Hound of the Baskervilles has been dead for five years, along with its no less monstrous owner, the naturalist Jack Stapleton. Sir Henry Baskerville is living contentedly at Baskerville Hall with his new wife, Audrey, and their three-year-old son, Harry. Until, that is, Audrey’s lifeless body is found on the moors, drained of blood. It would appear some fiendish creature is once more at large on Dartmoor and has, like its predecessor, targeted the unfortunate Baskerville family.

Historia
June 1957. One hot afternoon in the backwaters of the Deep South, a young black farmer named Tucker Caliban salts his fields, shoots his horse, burns his house, and heads north with his wife and child. His departure sets off an exodus of the state’s entire black population, throwing the established order into brilliant disarray. Told from the points of view of the white residents who remained, A Different Drummer stands, decades after its first publication in 1962, as an extraordinary and prescient triumph of satire and spirit.

At the Lisbon airport she has a surprise encounter with Angus Pemberton, whom she had last seen seven years ago when he left Steyne under a cloud and went to Brazil. Fun romantic adventure
Double Treasure by Clarence Budington Kelland is a wonderful book. There are zany characters, pirate treasure, intrigue and mystery twists and enough twists and turns to keep you guessing. The narration by Virginia Ferguson is wonderful. Her performance brings the characters and story to life. I received a free audiobook code for my honest review.

brilliant
An intriguing and interesting tale that drew me in and kept me listening raptly. This covers all the bases- intriguing, murder , romance , suspense, and a great adventure. June was bold baggage, and I enjoyed her character. The other characters were interesting and engaging with an unpredictable storyline. So many twists and turns that kept me engaged and guessing who done what until the end. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest opinion. The narrator did an excellent job bringing the characters and story to life.

Read why 5 stars first
I’m rating this 5 stars for the story and performance solely on my inability to appreciate what apparently is a work of art read by an accomplished narrator. Neither were my cup of tea.
I felt like the audiobook would never end. It was SO SLOW and sounded like a boring professor reading aloud in American Lit class. Yet, when I did a little homework, I learned that the author wrote this in 1946. That explains EVERYTHING.
Reading through his biography, I can’t fault this. Only blame myself for expecting something totally different from the synopsis.
