Publisher's Summary

As the Light Festival draws near, the Něssyrians craft paper lanterns, awaiting the most important holiday of the year. The Lyliňg Fighting House, too, prepares for celebration - by laying fresh sand onto the arena and setting up a match against their top pit fighter, the unrivalled Yüuzuki Ōren. His last match. One he can’t win.

With the odds more than stacked against him, the gorgeous Barbarian is as good as dead. Unless his lover, healer Ĥaiatto Ẽkana, proves himself every bit as determined as he is clever and finds a way to protect the man he’d stop at nothing to save.

4.5 stars fantasy story & narrator that drew me in

I forgot how much I enjoyed this story! It's the perfect fantasy story for me because it jumps right into it, explaining the world through the story instead of chapter after chapter of world building. I love them together, and I love that I understood who they are in such a short time. The way they care for each other is wonderful. Haiatto is willing to risk anything, do anything to save Yüu and the love they share. Plus there are vampires, and other cool characters!

Audio: I admit, at first I wasn't sure I was going to like the narrator, because he did a couple odd pauses, but after the first few paragraphs I quickly fell in love with him. His voice for Yüu made me melt, and I loved all the other voices as well. Everyone was distinct, and the female voices sound great as well. I will be looking for more from him.

Wherever you are is my home

Why did I ever fight the spark??? 😳 Seriously!?!?! Why did !? 😁 I’ll tell you why .. I love Miss Kasia Bacon’s writing. I really really do. 💜 I think she writes the most beautiful, poignant and sophisticated proses when it comes to fantasy and romance. But we also know that she’s the queen of shorties. (No pun intended 😏 ... wait .. I actually did 😂) Anyhow, though I loved each and every one of her previous stories, I was kinda afraid that this is going to be another shortie with a sequel. And that’s why it took a while for me to pick up this book but boy, was I wrong. 😅 This is by far, the most complete and sexiest story Miss Bacon has ever written. 🔥 I believe only she has the ability to write “performing fellatio” to be beautiful, pure and yet innocently titillating. It was a glorious reading experience. 😍

The love story between Yüu and Haiatto was really beautiful and heartwarming. The forbidden love story between a state-owned pit fighter and black sheep of a magic healer, the odds were really set against them. But of course, love did win over everything in the end. And as Yüu would said wherever he can hold And love Haiatto every night is home.

Michael Fox did a fantastic job narrating this lovely story. I mean I loved it when I read it but I loved it even more when I listened it. Highly recommended to anyone who loves fantasy with healthy amount of romance and swoon-worthy moments! 🥰❤️😘

A Wonderful Story

This is the first book in The Soldiers and Mercenaries Series. A charming book the writing was good. The plot was entertaining and it was steady throughout the book. I found the story and characters likeable The characters were developed and thought out. The narration was great, the narrator had different voices and wasn’t monotone and was expressive. I can recommend this book as a good read/listen. I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book for an honest review.

This little gem is from a “new to me” author ❤

4.5 stars

Kasia Bacon is a very talented author in her ability to weave a story and draw you in immediately. This was one of those reads where the story just pulls you in & consumes your attention…where you can’t help tearing through the readings as fast as you can. The short story is told from the POV of the healer, Ĥaiatto and his bond with the fighter, Yüu. The romance is tender, the characters are amazing and the world building doesn’t feel rushed.

I love this world Kasia Bacon has written in her Order Universe and can’t wait to read more!

As with so many short stories, the story ends too quickly. It just gets interesting and the reader fully invested in the characters and the tale ends.

I'm so thankful that I won a copy of Don't Fight The Spark in the BMBR Giveaway. Otherwise, I may have missed out on Kasia and her brilliant storytelling skills :)

Michael Fox brings Ĥaiatto's voice to life. Great job with the narration.

Loved it

I received an ARC of this audio for my honest review. This is my first book by this author. This book is set in a medieval fantasy world. This story is about Ĥaiatto and Yüuzuki's love story and it's a memorable one. The dialogue between them is so incredibly sweet. The author has a knack for writing characters with deep emotions. I can't wait to read/listen to more of her books.

Short but outstanding

If opposites attract, a healer and a fighter should be the perfect match… but by the very nature of their relationship, they are doomed not to last much….
Ĥaiatto Ẽkana knows how to heal his lover, fighter Yüuzuki Ōren, and would do anything to keep him from harm, despite his fierce warrior’s life style. But when he realizes Yüu is set to die in the ring, Ĥaiatto will have to prove how far he is willing to go to keep his lover alive...
Everybody knows I love this series. Every single one of these books I really love. But this is my first audio experience in the Order Universe, and I’ve found it fascinating. Michael Fox’ masterful performance works perfectly, and brings the characters alive. The rhythm, the changes in pitch and intonation, the cadence of voice and narration… It all works perfectly for me. My only complaint… there should be more!
Excellent!

Want to know what comes next

I’ll start by saying I’m someone who enjoys short audios as much as the longer ones. I often mix it up alternating short with long. A palette cleanser, if you will. So I was interested in listening to this audio. I wasn’t familiar with Kasia Bacon so this was to be a new adventure for me.

Don’t get me wrong, the audio was good. Michael Fox delivered a great performance and I always enjoy listening to books he narrates. The story was enjoyable. There were twists and turns that weren’t always predictable. When I read this was a Soldiers and Mercenaries story, I think I expected more action. There is action and violence in this book, but most of it takes place off stage. Possibly for the best as there is a lot of violence in this world. There is also love. At the heart of this book is a love story.

I am always in awe when an author does a good job at world building and Ms. Bacon has done that. There is a creativity in her fantasy story including magic and fantastical characters. For this one, I’ll be very interested to see where this world takes me.

Genius author and superb narration

How do you take a 5 star Kasia Bacon read and make it better? Why, you release it in audio with fantastic narration, simples!

I'm already a huge fan of this author, she nails a short story every. sinlge. time .... without fail and although these are short stories, they are so well written they never feel short or rushed or lacking.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Kasia Bacon is a genius. Period.

Sweet, funny and heartwarming story

Sweet, funny and heartwarming story about power of love between slave fighter and healer in word of magic, vampires and cruel creatures.
The book is a part of the Order Universe that I am a big fan, but it is a stand alone addition so you will not feel lost if you haven't read previous books by the author. You will meet new characters that are introduced to the universe world.
This story will take your breath away. It's intense, full of humour, good doze of romantic and sizzling hot scenes.
Having read that for you makes even better experience. I adore the way the actor changes voices and accents according to each character which makes all the difference and adds depth to the story.

A great story and a thrilling narration

A great M/M fantasy romance! The Order Universe is a new world to me, not once did I find myself lost or confused. The world building is seamless and organic. It unfolds alongside the plot. But what sold the story to me were the characters—distinctive and believable. I became invested in their plights right away. Despite the story being on the darker side, there’s enough humour to balance it out. Steamy bits are, well, steamy. And it ends on a HEA!

The British narrator is bang on. I loved his narration. Great accents and voices. I even listened through the glossary! Also, I prefer my audiobooks under 4 hours, so I found the length an advantage, too.

Prepare to be transported to another world

When I heard Kasia Bacon was releasing one of her books in audio I really wanted it to be 21 Arrow Salute (afterall it has my cheeky chappie in it) but I honestly think this was an excellent choice. Oh, the feels. The knowledge of your partner's impending doom and poinancy of each and every moment, the tendril of hope as you see a spark of possibility for a future together, after a lifetime of hiding.

The world building is effortless, even more so than when reading. The narrator fills the characters with passion and hope and love.

A beautiful story and an excellent performance.

The healer and the fighter...

A short listen about defending love and honor. The names are a bit hard fo spell but I enjoyed the story, the strength of a lover who heals and the loving heart of a fighter used for entertaining the masses. Good one!

Didn’t Spark my Interest

This is the first book by this author I have read/listened to and I’m afraid it didn’t grab my attention.
There was very little world building and the character building was shallow and under developed in my opinion, making it difficult to invest my time or emotions with the story or the main characters.
This may be due to the fact it is only 2 hours 27 minutes long but I found myself distracted despite the narration being very good.

The Gladiator and the Healer

This was an interesting story about a fighter who belongs to a wealthy household in the society and world that the author has created to set her stories within. He is the top champion, but the son of the family seems to have it in for him. The household's Healer is in love with the champion and this novella is the tale is how the two of them manage to survive a kidnapping attempt and an assassination attempt to come together and live more freely elsewhere.
Michael Fox is new-ish to me as a narrator, but he does an acceptable job of conveying the story. This story wasn't really my thing, but I enjoyed nonetheless it as it was short and quite exciting. I do like a good adventure with some MM love thrown in for a nice counterpoint.

Love and hope

A wonderful short story of love and hope. There was enough world building for me to get a sense of the world the healer Ĥaiatto and the top Barbarian fighter Yüuzuki live in. The love between them is beautiful, especially in such a harsh world. The story drew me in and the narrator enhanced the characters. I’ll be looking out for more in the series.

Good, but needed more world-building

I enjoyed this quick listen, but I felt the story lacked in the world-building until the glossary. Maybe you should listen to that part first, as it explains more about the characters, places, items, and history in the story. That said, I enjoyed the love story of Yüuzuki and Ĥaiatt. I especially loved Ĥaiatto's determination to do whatever it takes to save his lover, and Yüuzuki's faith and trust in him. I would love to see more of the master assassin and his vampire cohort (lover?). There is obviously a story there, and there is more of Yüuzuki and Ĥaiatt's story, too. Please give us more, Kasia.

The narration is very good and really gives life to the characters.
