Publisher's summary

The most influential work of the entire Spanish literary canon and a founding work of modern Western literature, Don Quixote is also one of the greatest works ever written. Hugely entertaining but also moving at times, this episodic novel is built on the fantasy life of one Alonso Quixano, who lives with his niece and housekeeper in La Mancha. Quixano, obsessed by tales of knight errantry, renames himself "Don Quixote" and, with his faithful servant Sancho Panza, goes on a series of quests. Many of these adventures, including tilting at windmills, are established in European literary consciousness.

Originally published in two volumes a decade apart (in 1605 and 1615), Don Quixote has been brought to life in its entirety in this audiobook.

a delightful classic

I've always loved this story. I had seen the play on Broadway as a child and memorized all the songs. But I had never read the book. I'm so glad I did. Excellently written, funny at times, and deeply moving, with top-notch narration. Highly recommended

Classic

The reader was pretty great and his ability to create a voice per character helped make the story more followable.

Actually funny

I was kind of expecting it to be a bit boring, but this was actually funny, engaging and sometimes even made me laugh out loud! It is a bit long at times, as older books don't tend to rush story development nor thoughts and philosophy, and I usually get annoyed when characters in a book start telling a long story, but I always found myself intrigued and wanting to hear more. And it's really cool get an accurate insight of how they lived back then, because this was actually written at the time it's depicting and not by a modern person imagining what it was like in those days. I've only listened to the first half (1st book), and as it's written in a bit of an old fashioned manner, which can get a bit dreary in the long run, I think I'll have a little break before starting on book two.

But this is the best narrator I've ever listened too! He has a pleasant voice, and also acts the characters without overacting, making it all sound flowy and natural.

Excellent story, narrator, and translation

Roy McMillan is a pleasure to listen to with an impressive range of voices for each new character, and I'm entirely satisfied with John Ormsby's translation.

Loved it!

I loved every moment of it. I am just sad I waited until I was 47 to finally get around to it.

Between the poetic song of the words that captivated, the wisdom (believe it or not) I learned, and the spell cast upon me with the performance of the narrator; I leave this book a changed person.

The story reminded me of the Oddyssey by Homer in some ways due to the never-ending situations our Hero and his side-kick find themselves.

I don't think you'll regret listening to it!
