Publisher's Summary

Two lost stories from the Fourth Doctor's era:

The Foe from the Future. Written by Robert Banks Stewart, adapted by John Dorney. The Grange is haunted, so they say. This stately home in the depths of Devon has been the site of many an apparition. And now people are turning up dead. The ghosts are wild in the forest. But the Doctor doesn't believe in ghosts.

The Tardis follows a twist in the vortex to the village of Staffham in 1977 and discovers something is very wrong with time. But spectral highwaymen and cavaliers are the least of the Doctor's worries. For the Grange is owned by the sinister Jalnik, and Jalnik has a scheme 2,000 years in the making. Only the Doctor and Leela stand between him and the destruction of history itself. It's the biggest adventure of their lives - but do they have the time?

The Valley of Death. Written by Philip Hinchcliffe, adapted by Jonathan Morris. A century after his great-grandfather, Cornelius, vanished in the Amazon rainforest, Edward Perkins is journeying to the depths of the jungle to find out what became of his ancestor's lost expedition. Intrigued by what appears to be a description of a crashed spacecraft in the diaries of that first voyage, the Doctor and Leela join him on his quest. But when their plane runs into trouble and ends up crash-landing, everyone gets more than they bargained for.

The jungle is filled with giant creatures and angry tribesmen, all ready to attack. But in the famed lost city of the Maygor tribe, something far, far worse is lurking. Something with an offer to make to mankind. Who are the Lurons, and can they be trusted? Will the Doctor defeat the plans of the malevolent Godrin, or will he become just another victim of the legendary Valley of Death?

Directed by Ken Bentley.

What a treat! The Doctor and Leela

There are two stories included and I liked both, but really loved the second one. I have listened to over 200 full-cast recordings by this wonderful company (Big Finish -- look them up for a lot more featuring Doctors 4-8, the War Doctor and now also Doctor 10!). I've never heard a bad story from them. This recording features the marvelous Tom Baker and Louise Jameson as Leela. It has all the flavor of 1970's Doctor Who. It's also fun to listen to the special features at the end. The actors all clearly adore Tom Baker and he loves recording these stories. It's very touching to hear him talk about how much he loves it. One also gets the bonus of often hearing actors from current TV or movies in these productions. I often recognize voices and look up the cast through the company's site and IMDB.

Wow, this is PERFECT! Classic Tom Baker as the 4th Doctor, and the wonderful Leela as his Companion....great villains, great dialogue, great incidental characters, exciting, funny...I have already listened to the first story TWICE!!!! Absolutely LOVE this...one of my favorite Audiobooks yet, and I have listened to a lot of wonderful ones!

If your Doctor wears a scarf you need this to make you whole....

Now if they could only finish Shada properly, an audio play would work just fine. Anyway these 2 story are both great and if Tom Baker was, ie IS your Doctor buy and listen to these, Google it if you don't believe me.

Nice Throwback

Amazing how much better this is than most of the Big Finish.range, attributable to its origins as an original 4th Doctor series story as well of course to the participation of Tom Baker and Louise Jameson. Has the energy of the originals too, though one story is hampered by the truly terrible American accent of one of the actors, par for the Big Finish course.

Also know that 90 minutes of the running time is taken up by intermittently interesting bonus material. Very self-congratulatory bit at least here not equal to or surpassing the actual story, which is true with so many of these Big Finish books.

I also wish they'd fix the bumps where chapters obviously finish. That's just sloppy and these aren't inexpensive. We deserve better.

Lost Treasures!

I thought the episode "The Valley of Death" was a great story! I'm sorry I never got to see either of these episodes and SO glad I was able to hear them on Audible!

It is not the entire box set, but is still good.

I thought I was a deal too good to be true and it was. Don't get me wrong, the stories are great and it's wonderful to hear Tom Baker again, but based on the description Audible has written, I thought I was getting the box set. Its only a collection of stories and "behind the scenes" snippets after each one. Use your credit to purchase it. Don't buy it.

Love to hear Tom Baker narrate an audiobook

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Anyone interested in Dr Who, and especially the classic episodes will enjoy this book narrated by the doctor himself.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Both the Dr of course and Leela

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Time travel and insects... who knew?

Classic Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker)

I'm so delighted to hear Tom Baker as The Doctor again.
The radio play format suits the series very well.

I also found the cast chatter interludes very enjoyable. It's marvelous to listen to them taking joy in their roles and sharing their experiences working together.

This is a must have performance for the serious who-phile.

Old stories told anew.

I must be stuck in a time eddie, because my ears are definitely in 1977 all over again. If you’ve ever watched classic doctor who then these two stories will not fail to enthrall you.

Decent but far much interview time rather than story

Got this during a audible buy one get one free offer. There was a book I really wanted and chose this as the second option as I did enjoy classic Dr Who on tv in decades gone by before the modern revamps. I don’t regret choosing it. The two stories are decent enough and worth the time listening to. Good performances too so no complaints on that front. However, about a third of the total play time is taken up with interviews by the cast/writers. This was absolutely of no interest to me as I just wanted to listen to a Dr Who story or two... anyway I skipped them all and ended up feeling contented with my purchase as it was an offer. I defiantly wouldn’t have been happy had I bought it via purchase price and probably wouldn’t have been happy spending a credit on it either due to a third being of no interest. But as it was a bonus to a book I would have probably eventually spent a credit on anyway... all is good

Classic Who... Almost

Tom Baker and Jon Pertwee, in my book, are the quintessential Doctors. If I had to pick a favourite, it would be Baker. So, finding this lost stories audio from Big Finish productions and featuring Baker himself as well as Louise Jameson reprising her role as the Doctor's assistant, Leela, I wavered little before clicking on the purchase button. Further, seeing the second story, The Valley of Death, was written by Philip Hinchcliff from the golden era of Baker's tenure along with Robert Holmes, this was a no brainer buy.

As is usual with Big Finish productions, the quality of the production is superb. The listener could be fooled into believing this was simply the audio pulled from a lost TV episode. I particularly like the nice touch of continuity at the beginning of the first story, The Foe From The Future, that sees the Doctor and Lela engaged in the conversation they began as they left Jaego and Lightfoot in the classic Talons of Wen-Cheung. This story fits the era well and could well be imagined as a lost episode. I enjoyed it.

However, to my surprise, I was actually disappointed with the Hinchcliff story, the one I had the highest hopes for, given his writing credentials. The Valley of Death started well, seeing oversized jungle creatures. Yes, this is Hinchcliff,I thought. however, this is a story of two halves, the second of which is rather a let down as it too soon becomes the well worn alien invasion scenario. Add to that, the lead alien protagonist sounds just like a public schoolboy, no real menace or alien-like voice at all! As a listener, when you hear the crisp accent with no voice treatment, the belief this is an alien at all is hard to maintain. Things become rather farcical when said alien jumps in a taxi to the BBC television centre in his conquest of the Earth! Silly story elements like that were what killed Doctor Who's initial run back in 1989.

I can't fault the production quality, it's excellent. Just a shame about the second part of the Philip Hinchcliff story.

Oh, there's quite a bit of extras in the form of cast interviews etc.

First Time Listening to Big Finish

I thought I'd take a punt with a Big Finish audio as I want to listen to some eighth Doctor stories and had heard some good things. I chose this collection because... well... it was in the sale... oh, and Tom Baker is *my* Doctor.
overall the stories were well written and acted but there were a couple of times the sound effects weren't headphones friendly.
Recommended.

Love Dr Who but....

Great stories, but I didn’t realise there would be so much backstage dialogue between the episodes. Not as good as some of the other Dr Who audiobooks I have because of this.
