Publisher's summary

Peter Davison reads the first gripping adventure for the Fifth Doctor.

Still weak and confused after his fourth regeneration, the Doctor retreats to Castrovalva to recuperate. But Castrovalva is not the haven of peace and tranquillity the Doctor and his companions are seeking. Far from being able to rest quietly, the unsuspecting time-travellers are caught up once again in the evil machinations of the Master. Only an act of supreme self-sacrifice will enable them to escape the maniacal lunacy of the renegade Time Lord.

Peter Davison reads Christopher H. Bidmead’s complete and unabridged novelisation, first published by Target Books in 1983.

A great story...

Castrovalva is certainly NOT a typical Doctor Who story! It contains twists and turns, and there is always a dark figure lurking in the background. Still it is very well written, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone. All the mathematical phraseology, evidently meant to confuse, is very well explained. The action comes on in spurts and keeps you interested until the rather bittersweet ending. All in all, this is a great Doctor Who story. The only thing I could say is that the description on audible.com is rather inaccurate.

delightful!

this was delightful. davison does a great job. there were some strange audio decisions, but they were made with authenticity in mind. a little more insight into the doctor's bewilderment that castrovalvan people can read was unnecessary, but i love this story and was excited to hear the novelization. it did not disappoint.

Fun but problematic

The ending warps the original epilogue of explaining who drove when. Peter Davison voicing young companions, especially females? Trying to describe Castrovalva itself? Nice try!
