Although clinical research has been conducted on narcissism as a disorder, less is known about its effects on victims who are in toxic relationships with partners with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Individuals with this disorder engage in chronic devaluation and manipulation of their partners, a psychological and emotional phenomenon known as "narcissistic abuse". Unfortunately, the full extent of what narcissistic abuse entails is not taught in any psychology class or diagnostic manual.

Still struggling from the effects of a narcissistic or psychopathically abusive relationship? Narcissistic Victim Syndrome is not officially recognised, nor is it widely even known. Covert Narcissists dangle their vulnerability in front of you as bait, just waiting for your good nurturing mothering/fathering instincts to kick in and rescue the poor little lost child they are presenting to you. But beneath the mask of a shy, vulnerable and “good person” something far more sinister lurks.

Romantic relationships with narcissists typically start out like a fairy tale. There is the moment where you meet the narcissist, and you feel instantly attracted to him or her. You cannot quite place it but something about the narcissist feels too good to be true. There is a reason for this — she is projecting what she is learning is your ideal partner. She learns from the feedback you give when interacting and tweaks her behaviors until you feel like you are looking at an idealized version of everything you want.

Within every community, toxic people can be found hiding in families, couples, companies, and places of worship. The cryptic nature of psychological abuse involves repetitious mind games played by one individual or a group of people. Psychological abuse leaves no bruises. There are no broken bones. There are no holes in the walls. The bruises, brokenness, and holes are held tightly within the target of the abuse.

I wished I knew this before
This book truly brought me a lot of comfort and made me feel understood and feel empowered to start changing things. Whoever gave this book a bad review has clearly never been in my shoes or understands. I’m starting the divorce process from a narcissist while also approaching therapy. This is the 3rd book I’ve tried and it helps. My narcissist has a gf and our dog just died so he got her a puppy and is selling our home, but still continues to try to control me hurt me and suck me back in. It’s made grieving extremely hard. It’s hard to accept grieving someone who was physically, verbally, and emotionally abusive. But I will replay this book. I found it helped me understand what they are doing and how they think.

A must for contentious custody cases.
I can’t even begin to explain how much this book has helped me. I have listened to it several times during my 5 year custody battle. It has been an integral part of my success and sanity when dealing with my ex and the family court system. Tina, I will never be able to express to you how much your words have impacted me and brought me from a place of despair to a place of hope. Although I’m still in the middle of battle, I now have the strength to endure. Before your book I literally thought I was losing my mind. I was completely disoriented by the actions of my ex and felt helpless by the lack of response I was getting in court. For those who are in the middle of a hostile custody battle this book is a must. Tina’s book “The Narc Decoder” is amazing too!

Required Reading: Survivors & Legal Professionals
If you found this title, you are likely in some stage of divorce from a person whose history and behavior meet the criteria for clinical narcissism, ASPD, or a Cluster B personality disorder. This resource will help you make sense of a situation that is otherwise inexplicable: the realization that your spouse would rather destroy you than relinquish the complete control he has systematically taken--over your life, and the lives of your children. This will be the fight of your lifetime, and until the family court system is better at protecting all victims of abuse, and not just those whose spouses have progressed (or devolved) to the point of physical battery, it is imperative that you have the tools and information necessary to expose the nature of covert abuse: emotional, psychological, and financial abuse being the most common in relationships of coercive control. Rather than putting a halt to the crazy-making behaviors that preempted your decision to leave, divorce will likely exacerbate them to a crisis level. If you understand the uncannily predictable behavior of narcissists, you will save yourself from much of the confusion and manipulation, the pressure to reconcile (at your peril, statisically) and help mitigate the harm to your children. The advice and resources, as well as the advocacy of Dana Jackson and others like her, will help to prevent the pitfalls of contentious divorce, in an arena where narcissists otherwise tend to thrive.

Loved the book!!! I am dealing with so much of the same. Plus my Ex is on serious drugs. It's very sad the courts do not take mothers more seriously and do more to protect our children. Thank you for bringing this topic to light and explaining it in a real life common sense way to those that need to hear or are educating themselves on the topic.

I'm so thankful to have found this book. No one understands. No one in 7 years of court gone wrong situations, has a clue. Thank you for sharing your story and inspiration. Lawyers have taken my money and the children and I continue on a rollercoaster. Thank you for your tools and advice on how to better deal with a NPD ex and his family. Thanks for the all your desire to help others and focus on the children's rights. I had all but given up. My battle in court started in 2011 and I just now found you. Prior to stepping onto the battlefield with a Narcissist, it is imperative to know their playbook both forwards and backwards. The behavior of individuals with Narcissistic Personality Disorder generally defies logic but sadly, their tactics in the Family Court System often fool Judges, Commissioners, Attorneys, Minor's Counsel, Social Workers, Therapists, and even trained Evaluators.

Story
Romantic relationships with narcissists typically start out like a fairy tale. There is the moment where you meet the narcissist, and you feel instantly attracted to him or her. You cannot quite place it but something about the narcissist feels too good to be true. There is a reason for this — she is projecting what she is learning is your ideal partner. She learns from the feedback you give when interacting and tweaks her behaviors until you feel like you are looking at an idealized version of everything you want.

Story
Although clinical research has been conducted on narcissism as a disorder, less is known about its effects on victims who are in toxic relationships with partners with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Individuals with this disorder engage in chronic devaluation and manipulation of their partners, a psychological and emotional phenomenon known as "narcissistic abuse". Unfortunately, the full extent of what narcissistic abuse entails is not taught in any psychology class or diagnostic manual.
