Publisher's summary

Before ascending to heaven, Jesus instructed his followers to "make disciples of all nations". But what does this command actually entail? What does it look like for Christians to care for one another's spiritual well-being and growth?

In this introduction to the basics of discipling, veteran pastor and author Mark Dever uses biblical definitions and practical examples to show how Christians can help one another become more like Christ every day.

The eighth volume in the 9Marks: Building Healthy Churches series, this short book explains how discipling should function in the context of the local church, teaching pastors and church leaders how to cultivate a culture of edification and growth in their congregations.

Practical and challenging

I found this book practical and challenging towards biblical behavior to follow Christ and be willing to live in an encouraging way with others that we may grow more mature in Christ. Thanks!

Great insights - foundational work of the church

Mark Dever offers his deep experience and expertise, with practical examples of how his church is involved in intentional discipleship, based on Scripture.
Discipleship is what Jesus told the church to do, yet most of our churches are not focused on it. Mark helps us consider how to develop a culture of discipleship and how to be intentional about discipleship for all of our members, all in this brief book.

Great book that mirrors the Bible

This book is a great representation of what we as Christians need to be like, strive to serve like, and points to the Bible and Christ, the head of the church. This book explains how we are to be humble, quick to forgive, and to delegate authority and allow others to lead, freeing up time for oneself, and fostering growth and leadership for those that one disciples and leads to Christ, while living life together and staying accountable to ourselves, our peers, others, and most of all, to God.

Good book on Discipleship

This is a good book on what discipleship is and how it should be promoted in local congregations. My only complaint is that Mark Dever seems to place more emphasis on church-based discipleship as opposed to personal/relational discipleship, which is more effective and closer to what happened 2000 years ago. He gives great advice on why discipleship is important, how it needs to be relational (hence my slight confusion on his seeming to focus on the church) and point people to be more like Christ through relationship. Perhaps Dever is simply saying that the church needs to promote and lead by example, which I do agree with.

In any case, this is a good short book with great concepts everyone can build on to promote building disciples of Christ.
