Publisher's Summary

I killed a girl last night. I did it with my bare hands and an old piece of pipe I found lying next to the dumpster. But that's not the part that got me. The part that scared me, the part I can't seem to wrap my head around and still has me reeling, was that when she charged me, her body shifted; and then she was a wolf - all snapping teeth and extended claws. But by the time I stood over her lifeless body, she was a girl again. That's about the time I went into shock. And that was the moment he showed up.

Now, all I can do is accept the truths that are staring me in the face. One: werewolves do exist. And two: I was born to kill them.

Fans of paranormal, hunters, shifters, and werewolves will love the Dirty Blood series!

This was a 3,5 stars for me

I like the storyline but felt there was too much emphasis on the term ‘dirty blood’, it made Tara naive, in my mind... and that clashes with the tougher Tara that proves she’s not a naive thing when she gets attacked and such.

I do think that it was written the way it was to emphasize the fact that Tara is completely new in that world and for the most part, it works well but still, that term felt overused. Even as a newcomer in this world where she wouldn’t realize how offensive the term is or rather, how insulting it is meant to be, I don’t think it’s a natural reflex to constantly use that specific term (especially seeing the kind of reactions that term gets), or the other term ‘one of each’, I feel like it would be more normal if she would use the term ‘mixed’ or even ‘half-breed’ or something more explanatory instead of the insulting term (except on the occasions she wants to be abrasive, of course she needs to opt for the insulting term on those occasions).
It kinda threw me out of the story a bit after whenever she used that term after a while, hence the three star rating instead of 4 stars. This one for me is a 3,5 stars.
It’s a good story although there are some less original aspects (a destiny, a sort of chosen one -that will bring peace between the hunters and the werewolves-) but I happen to like those aspects so so they don’t bother me. The hot and cold treatment from Wes however was a bit much at times, he felt a bit inconsistent. Loved Jack and his family though, hope to see more of them in the sequels, same with Tara’s grandma, let’s just say that she is one awesome grandma (keeping it spoiler free)

Eventhough all these aspects keep me from giving a 5 star rating, I definitely like it enough to want to continue this series so don’t let those details deter you from checking this one out because I feel like this is a rocky start but great finale kind of series.

great book and narration. too bad book 2 is so terrible

I really liked this book a lot. Good YA urban fantasy with actual creepy/bloody/killing bad guys. It's just upsetting that the second book reads like middle school drama. I'm on chapter 28 and still no fights, saving good guys, killing bad guys. It's only been about not being the new kid and boyfriend drama. Bleh.

Fantastic.

I first read Dirty Blood when it came out and immediately fell in love with it, well this time it was no different. I fell in love with it all over again.

We are thrown into the action pretty much straight away. Tara is on a date with her boyfriend George. He turns up late, as usual, and Tara says, enough is enough, and breaks up with him. She leaves by herself and ends up traveling through an alley. One second Tara is walking, the next she is facing down the unbelievable. A girl starts charging at her but then it's a wolf. Tara is stunned but her body reacts to the danger. She ends up picking up a pipe and killing the girl/wolf. Tara is in shock when a boy turns up. Who is he? What is going on? From that second on Tara's life changes forever!

I loved Tara. She is spunky, brave and kick ass but is still a normal girl. Her life is like any other teenagers until the moment the wolf attacks. She learns what she is and I loved that she struggled at first with everything. It took her time to believe and jump on board. Her whole attitude and demeanor is relateable and she was easy to connect to.

Then we have Wes. *Sigh* Wes!!! Tara has no idea what to make of him at the start because he is so standoffish, add in the fact that she is a Hunter and he is a Werewolf and immediately you have a forbidden romance. I loved Wes. He is stubborn, strong, brave and kind. He is definitely the strong silent type.

I loved the romance in Dirty Blood. It takes time for Wes and Tara to hit it off, despite the pull Tara feels toward him. There's no insta love here and despite George being in the picture at the start, there's no love triangle, which is always a plus!!

Dirty Blood is an action packed, edge of your seat read. Right from the start it pulls you in and won't let go, even after you have read the last page. Heather Hildenbrand weaves a fantastic story that will leave you breathless and turning the pages as quickly as you can to see what happens. Everything about this book is amazing, from the breathtaking plot to the phenomenal writing, Dirty Blood is a must read.

This is one series that everyone should check out. Dirty Blood is a phenomenal first book and believe me when I say that every book is just as good. This is one of my all time favourite series and I can't recommend them highly enough. Go get this book NOW, you wont be sorry!!

Kelly Pruner did a great job with the narration. She performed Tara perfectly!! She had her sass and kick ass attitude down to a t and even brought Wes alive. She didn't try too hard to do a male voice and I appreciated that because often time it can come across forced. I thoroughly enjoyed her performance and look forward to more by her.

Kinda Twilight 2.0?

I got to listen to this at the courtesy of the author in exchange for a review.

First, let’s talk narration, because if you’re considering using your audible credit for it, that’s really the most important part right? It was not terrible, but there were things that bothered me. The narrator is a very loud speaker and I felt like she was kinda shouting the story at me. Also, she has a little bit of that James T. Kirk cadence, that’s not horrible, but it is distracting. Like, please, just get out the entire sentence without pausing. Please. On the flip side, I liked the way she voiced the actual characters. They were each distinct and very well done. I think you should listen to the sample before making up your mind to use your precious credit.

Now, story... this was very, very, very Twilight-y. So if you love that series, you’re bound to like this one. There is plenty of emotional angst, as well as action, and the delightful confusion of falling love.

However, there is also a super unhealthy relationship with a guy who a) keeps secrets he shouldn’t, and b) is supremely controlling because he’s “protecting” her, even though she is fully capable of handling herself. There is also a super bitchy and over protective Mom in the picture who is just as bad and WORSE than this love interest guy is. By the end of this, I want to tell Tara to just run for the hills from every single person she knows. Toxic relationships.

So that’s the the bad. The good is, it’s entertaining enough, even through the cringe worthy control being exerted over Tara. There is good character development, and there is definitely more I want to know about some of the supporting characters. The world she has built is well thought out and just complex enough to keep you interested without getting confused.

While this wasn’t my favorite book, I think there are plenty of things for others to enjoy. And it was by no means “bad”, more like, just not quite for me.

A surprisingly amazing book

I was surprised by just how much I enjoyed this audiobook. I found it free and most free books tend to be hit or miss. This was perfect to be listened to! It has a teeny tiny cliffhanger but nothing too bad. Lots of action and just the right amount of suspense. The narrator is VERY talented!

Unique Take on Werewolves & Hunters!

The story starts action packed and draws you in right away. The characters are interesting and well developed. I stayed on the edge of my seat for most of it and couldn’t put it down.

Narration was well done and brought the story to life.

This author is very talented and weaves a captivating and outstanding story. The world building is well done and the story unique.

If you enjoy YA/Teen paranormal romance with shifters, werewolves & hunters with a touch of romance, you will love this series! I’m young at heard and I loved it! I really enjoyed the storyline and the twist and turns. I’m looking forward to see what will happen next.

Dirty blood

In this book we follow Tera as she learns werewolves are real, and she was born to hunt them. Everything Tera’s knows about her family and past comes into question as she learns about this new world she thought only existed in fairytales. This was a great story with well defined characters and plot. I really enjoyed learning about this world, can Tera learn how to protect herself in time?

Great Action

I enjoyed Dirty Blood.
The narrator was engaging and used her voice to embellish the pacing. I enjoyed listening to her.
The story is thrilling. This book starts off strong and continues at a fast pace. There is always some kind of action but the author does not sacrifice mythology. There is back story with intrigue that keeps you engaged with the main character.
I enjoyed this story of a girl with "dirty blood" who is both hunter and werewolf. I look forward to seeing what happens in the next one.
I received a copy from the author but all opinions are my own.

So Good!

I loved the whole concept of this book. The characters were well fleshed-out, the world-building was great, and the story-line is still fairly fresh even in a genre that has almost done it all. I also did mostly enjoy the narration as well. However, sometimes, the narration felt like I was listening to a game show host, but it's saved by her character voices. Overall, still a good book to listen to.

Mediocre Yet Predictable Werewolf Story

I first purchased the book on a free promotion because the cover captivated me, as did the title. I was then given the audiobook and quickly realized how lengthy the story was. The narrator was commendable, though slow enough that I could up the speed to 1.25 for a comfortable pace.

What started out great, quickly stalled as the teenage characters stuttered while trying to establish a plot. This is a YA story with no sex. Very mild cursing - it might have happened twice in the entire book. The teenage angst in my opinion did a disservice to the story. The back and forth of trying to protect Tara, her wallowing because no one would tell her anything, everyone making decisions for her, Tara again wallowing because no one would ask her opinion - they would just make decisions for her, so Tara gets impulsive and makes a bad decision that puts her in danger, and the cycle continues. You could cut out the back and forth, the wallowing, and still have a decent sized book.

And overhead hangs the distinct feeling that this story is a werewolf version of Twilight. The somewhat family dynamic of Wes and his clan, the fancy car, his unique ability, the way he shows up unannounced in Tara's house, "breaking up" with her to protect her. The story was already predictable, and these similarities don't help. When it comes to the werewolves, it was odd to me that they had more cat-like claws than actual wolves. It was an awkward difference that seemed forced yet convenient way to injure Tara since other hunters don't appear to have any injuries. I also didn't understand why none of the hunters would have reached out to her to learn about her or her abilities considering she accomplished the impossible feat of killing a werewolf before ever getting proper training. Maybe I missed it, but it also seemed like she had one training session, nothing else happens, but all of a sudden she's had consecutive training, yet can't work with metal tipped items, but let's give her a gun to defend herself without any gun safety; I just couldn't comprehend the reasoning behind it. There's only so much your readers can just accept at face value and roll with before it becomes discouraging.

Book 1 is wrapped up with a nice bow around one villain, while creating room for the next one. Yet I don't know how she could stretch it out to a 5 book series, and I can imagine why the number of reviews have dwindled as the series goes on. I think she does have potential if she could get out of writing the teenage age range and write something truly new and unique.

This story had me hooked!

What a fantastic story! This is the first book I have heard/read from Heather Hildenbrand and I am hooked! Fast pace with lots of action. Fair warning there is lots of violence between the two races. Tara and Wes have a strong attraction to each other and it is a slow build relationship. I didn’t want to stop listening as Kelly Pruner read the book fabulously! Highly recommended and I cannot wait to get my hands on the next book! 💕

Annoying weak lead character

Such an annoying weak main character- weak and never does anything right and gets saved by others
