Die Story rankt sich um Zino, den Zwillingsbruder von Agata, der Protagonistin des ersten Teils der Nullen-Reihe. Er meint, ein Problem damit zu haben, dass ihn in wenigen Tagen die Null in Form seines 40. Geburtstages einholen wird. Tatsächlich hat er ein Problem damit, dass er seine Homosexualität als Grund dafür betrachtet, dass Agatas und sein Vater die Familie sang- und klanglos verlassen hat, als beide im Teenager-Alter waren.
Sein Partner Michael, von Zino meist Mimi genannt, schlägt ihm vor, der Null ein Schnippchen zu schlagen, indem sie beide die nächsten Tage auf einer Wandertour quer durch die Alpen verbringen. Doch schon nach kurzer Zeit lässt Mimi durchblicken, dass ihm nichts mehr an Zino liegt und verlässt ihn. Vor Trauer wie gelähmt überlegt auch Zino, die Wanderung abzubrechen, ringt sich aber schließlich doch dazu durch, den Weg zu gehen. Er will ihn dazu benutzen, um sich über sich und sein Leben klar zu werden. Auf der Tour trifft er zwei Frauen, die unterschiedlicher kaum sein könnten.
Schließlich findet er nicht nur die Liebe zu sich, sondern auch zu jemandem, der ihn um seiner selbst willen liebt.
