In Friedrichs Mergels Selbstmord erfüllt sich der hebräische Spruch, den die Juden nach dem Mord an Aaron an der Buche anbringen ließen: Unaufhaltsam hat der Baum den Täter zu sich herangezogen, bis er sich schließlich wie Judas am Baum erhängt hat.

Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, geboren am 10. Januar 1797 auf Schloss Hülshoff bei Münster, stammt aus altwestfälischem Geschlecht. Trotz der von Krankheiten erschütterten Jugend erhielt sie eine reichhaltige Bildung. Sie knüpfte Bekanntschaft mit Schlegla, Adele Schopenhauer, Schueckg, Uhland, Schwab und anderen. Seit 1841 lebte sie meist am Bodensee. Dort erfuhr sie eine halbmütterliche Liebe zum 17 Jahre jüngeren Schücking. Sie starb am 24. Mai 1848 in Meersburg am Bodensee.
