Was uns heute an den Hochalpen lieblich und idyllisch erscheint, war für die Tiroler Landbevölkerung im 19. Jahrhundert ein zäher Kampf ums Überleben. Die Autorin Wilhelmine von Hillern, die 1875 mit der Geier-Wally einen Bestseller landete, war selbst kein Kind der Berge. Aber ihr zweibändiger Roman weist uns neben der eigentlichen Liebesgeschichte auf mehrere Nebenschauplätze. Feudale Strukturen aus Grundbesitzern, die mit ihrem Reichtum protzen, und dem rechtlosen Dienstpersonal. Eine bigotte, streng moralisierende Weltsicht, die wiederum dazu diente, nicht an der Machtverteilung zu rütteln. Mangel an Bildung und schöngeistiger Erbauung, welcher den Bewohnern der Hochtäler einen harten Charakter verleihen muss. Bart- oder Lämmergeier wurden nicht als schützenswerte Kreaturen angesehen, sondern gnadenlos verfolgt und getötet. Und nicht zuletzt gibt uns die intensive Naturbeschreibung im Zeitalter dahin schmelzender Gletscher einen mahnenden Fingerzeig.
Das Gerüst der Handlung könnte einem Groschenroman entstammen: Schönes junges Mädchen liebt schönen jungen Mann, insgeheim er sie auch, aber durch widrige Umstände kann er sich nicht erklären. Schicksalhafte Begegnungen, Reaktionen, Überreaktionen, Katastrophen, Happy End - und das alles vor der gewaltigen Kulisse der Ötztaler Alpen. Aber durch Hillerns machtvolle Sprache und raffinierte Dramaturgie mit immer neuen Volten hebt sich der Roman wohltuend von den Dramoletten der Gartenlaube-Zeit ab. Kein Wunder, dass der Stoff wieder und wieder zu Verfilmungen herhalten musste.
Mehr als 20 Jahre Jahre trug ich mich mit der Idee, ein Hörbuch daraus zu machen. Als mir die kostbare Erstausgabe in schöner Fraktur und zeitgenössischer Orthographie wieder in die Hände fiel, ging ich ans Werk. Ein Problem ergab sich in der ausgeschriebenen wörtlichen Rede. Kenner der Tiroler Mundart werden schnell bemerken, dass ich alle Feinheiten des Idioms nicht fehlerfrei wiedergeben kann und bitte um Nachsicht. Musikalische Akzente bilden Ausschnitte aus der Alpensymphonie von Richard Strauss, die der Komponist am Pult des Bayerischen Staatsorchesters 1941 aufgenommen hat. Aber in diesem Fall hört man kaum heraus, dass es sich um den Schneeferner-Gletscher auf der Zugspitze und nicht den Ötztaler Marzellferner handelt... (Peter Bieringer, Hamburg, im März 2023.)

Über den Sprecher:
Peter Bieringer (*1957) gehörte viele Jahre zum Ensemble der NDR-Sprecher, seit 2006 ist er freischaffend. Seine Stimme ist präsent in zahllosen Radiofeatures, TV-Dokumentationen, Synchronrollen und Hörspielen.
