Publisher's summary

On a dark night in the summer of 1859, three men enter the home of Dr. Matthew Callahan and shoot him dead in front of his pregnant wife. Unbeknownst to them, Li Lian, his wife, hails from a long line of women gifted in ways that scare most folks - the witches of the MacPherson clan - and her need for vengeance is as vast and unforgiving as the Great Plains themselves.

Written to the child she carries, Devil's Call traces Li Lian's quest from the Nebraska Territory to Louisiana to the frozen Badlands, to bring to justice the monster responsible for shooting her husband in the back. This long-rifled witch will stop at nothing - and risk everything - in her showdown with evil.

Fun combination of the Old West meets Witches.

I was excited to get into this book as I felt it was a very interesting combination of the Old West meets Witches. Not too long into the book though I unfortunately started losing interest. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great either. I was originally going to give it only 2 stars, but moved it up to 3 stars because I did have a few laughs with this book, but one thing that made me cringe was the author J. Danielle Dorn mentioned the Three Fold Law when our protagonist was talking and the Three Fold Law didn't come around until like 1960's or so and this story takes place in the 1800's. I wished she left that part out as she referenced back to the Three Fold Law multiple times in the book and I would have liked to see our main Witch Protagonist act on her abilities without the Wiccan rules that didn't come around until 100 years later or more governing her. Then all the book is is just the main character writing one long letter to her unborn child and the author threw some magic lore into the mix and that's that. The whole book, for as short as it is, seemed to be a slow burn with a "that's all?" type of ending. Now the narrator Christy Romano did a fabulous job with the narration which made the story enjoyable. Christy Romano does a fantastic job with the Old West style draw to her accent which makes the narration fun and brings the main protagonist alive. Now as for the English accent she tries, that one doesn't go over so well and had me raisong an eyebrow in entertainment, but for the most part Christy Romano does a fantastic job. All in all the book wasn't too bad and I loved the idea of the story. I just wish there was more to it.

Witchcraft and Revenge

This was an awesome read! It made me think of Practical Magic meets Stephen King's Gunslinger/Wizard and Glass. It was much darker than I expected and I absolutely loved it! Amazing performance as well
