Publisher's Summary

The instant number-one New York Times best seller

From the reporter who was there at the very beginning comes the revealing inside story of the partnership between Steve Bannon and Donald Trump - the key to understanding the rise of the alt-right, the fall of Hillary Clinton, and the hidden forces that drove the greatest upset in American political history.

Based on dozens of interviews conducted over six years, Green spins the master narrative of the 2016 campaign from its origins in the far fringes of right-wing politics and reality television to its culmination inside Trump's penthouse on election night.

The shocking elevation of Bannon to head Trump's flagging presidential campaign on August 17, 2016, hit political Washington like a thunderclap and seemed to signal the meltdown of the Republican Party. Bannon was a bomb-throwing pugilist who'd never run a campaign and was despised by Democrats and Republicans alike.

Yet Bannon's hard-edged ethno-nationalism and his elaborate, years-long plot to destroy Hillary Clinton paved the way for Trump's unlikely victory. Trump became the avatar of a dark but powerful worldview that dominated the airwaves and spoke to voters whom others couldn't see. Trump's campaign was the final phase of a populist insurgency that had been building up in America for years, and Bannon, its inscrutable mastermind, believed it was the culmination of a hard-right global uprising that would change the world.

Any study of Trump's rise to the presidency is unavoidably a study of Bannon. Devil's Bargain is a tour-de-force telling of the remarkable confluence of circumstances that decided the election, many of them orchestrated by Bannon and his allies, who really did plot a vast right-wing conspiracy to stop Clinton. To understand Trump's extraordinary rise and Clinton's fall, you have to weave Trump's story together with Bannon's, or else it doesn't make sense.

Critic Reviews

One of The New York Times Book Review’s Notable Books of 2017 One of NPR’s Great Reads of 2017

“The first deeply insightful political narrative of the Trump era.” (David Leonhardt, The New York Times)

“You won’t be able to put it down. I certainly couldn’t, surrendering a weekend I should have rightly spent with the kids. I spent it instead with a 63-year-old nationalist whom Time magazine all but called the shadow President of the United States.... Addictive.” (Newsweek)

“Mr. Green is a talented reporter and a gifted storyteller. The anecdotes he records from the chaotic 2016 Trump campaign are both well chosen (they’re there for thematic reasons, not as gratuitous gossip) and brilliantly told.” (Wall Street Journal)

Just When You Thought You Knew It All

I devoured this book all at once. Riveting, well written, and open minded. Don't let the title turn you off. The writer takes a dispassionate view of Trump and Bannon, just giving us the facts and a story beyond what I knew. I'm a political junkie, and can't go a day without The Times, Post and Politico. But I was transfixed on all I discovered.
The writer dissects the Trump phenomenon better than anyone, as well as the follies of Clinton's campaign.
I voted for Hillary, but this book gave me a whole new... respect for what Trump accomplished.

Fascinating

Fascinating story told in an admirably politically agnostic way. Never felt there was an agenda...just the story. Came away informed, not impassioned.

It was hacked

I was a supporter of neither candidate, but it seemed like Hillary would win. This is the tale of how Bannon, Britebart news and the alt right movement systematically took her down. It seemed very factual to me, no comment on Trump as a president, by my feeling echo the author's.

Great Book of 2016 Election

This book is mainly about Steve Bannon. This man is extremely clever and near genius. It shows Bannon in a neutral light. The ending was not what I expected. The writer seems not to be a fan of Donald Trump. Overall a great read about the 2016 election.

Solves the mystery of the election and Bannon

Good flushing out of Steve Bannon and Trunp's backgrounds that have made them into the people they are and how they came to be in a position to turn the world upside down. To me, neither are geniuses nor clarivoyant, but 2 individuals who are simply willimg to read what os obvious and act upon it to their advantage no matter the cost to the world. Anyone could achieve what they have if they are willing to do anything to achieve it. Fortunately most people are not as devoid of a soul as they are. The most useful thing about this bool is that it shows where democrats have misread the utility of identity politics and how their self-righteousness in defense of their cause has been AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE the cause of their failure to win elections. If Democrats do not learn from this book, they will continue to sit outside in the cold while Republicans continue to reshape the nation for their own gain.

Time to educate yourself

Very interesting book on Trump and Bannon’s political alliance. Gives the reader insight into the election, and the forces that put Trump in office. For those that see Trump as a buffoon and Bannon as simply a racist are clearly underestimating these very smart and driven men. And that is where the danger is. The narrator did a great job as well. I️ highly recommend to those who want to begin to understand how we currently got to where we are today. It is only a start, though. Nine hours was just not enough.

A great source.

I followed the 2016 election obsessively and still learned a lot from this book. I honestly hope America never has an election like this one again. I'm sure that we can and will do better.
