Publisher's Summary

He was a hard-working small business owner, an Army veteran, an attentive lover, and a doting father. But he was also something more, something sinister. A master of deception, he was a rapist, arsonist, and bank robber, and a new breed of serial killer, one who studied other killers to perfect his craft. He methodically buried kill-kits containing his tools of murder years before returning to reclaim them. Viewing the entire country as his hunting grounds, he often flew across the country to distant locations where he would rent a car and drive hundreds or even thousands of miles before randomly selecting his victims. Such were the methods and madness of serial killer Israel Keyes. Such were the demands of the Devil in the Darkness.

Hire a professional narrator

The narration is SO bad I can't even listen. The emphasis is put on the wrong words as if he is just reading individual words rather than a sentence. I can't possibly tell you if the story is good or not because I can't get through the book with this narration.

Awful Narrator...

It is really difficult to review this book because it was very hard to understand the story as read by this narrator. He has an extremely odd reading pattern in that he stops as if there is a period in the middle of sentences to catch his breath. As a result, it often changes the meaning of a sentence. I think he reads to the end of each line and stops for a breath instead of the end of each sentence. I was quite distracted with this and had to stop the recording and go back and listen when sentences did not make sense. I realized it was because he does not use periods or commas as reading guides. This made the story very unenjoyable and I would not purchase a book with Don Kline as the narrator in the future. I volunteer in a recording studio; editing books that have been recorded for people who are blind and I wonder if this book was put through any review process before it was offered for sale. Because I think most sound editors would flag this book .

Interesting look into the brutal mind of a killer.

But the narrator has poor enuciation and pronunciation, and poor reading rhythm.

The production suffers , while the storyline is intriguing.

Awful Narration

The narrator is terrible. The cadence and delivery of the story is broken and seems to jump around. Would rather have read the book myself. Very disappointed.

Fascinating story of evil

The subject of this story is truly evil. His story leaves one questioning the true nature of humanity. The actions and decisions of this man were so coldly calculating that he is a clear example of the sociopath.

Unfortunately the narrator has a stilted, halting style that truly challenges one to enjoy what is otherwise a very interesting story. Ugh one of the worst I have had to suffer through.

Couldn't listen to this, and not bc of the story!

The performance was so terrible I fast forwarded through a lot of this. The reader mispronounces a LOT of words. His pacing is awful. All around so bad I want to send this back and get the physical book to read for myself.

Murder porn

Describing a rape and murder as if trying to titillate. Most true crime doesnt read like this... Disturbing.

Good book, narration was stilted

The story line was well done and was easy to follow. The narration was done as if he was telling a ghost story to 10 year olds. This does not make the content more creepy it does the opposite by constantly pacing it like there is a punchline. However I found if I put it to 1.25 speed the lazy narration became less of a bother. But I would rather read this one myself.

Very creepy true crime novel about a serial killer

Loved the book! The narration was great and the book itself is stuffed full of details about Israel Keyes' life and crimes that aren't normally brought up in documentaries about him. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Narrator was horrible

Author became repetitive. Narrator was horrible. Improper inflection. I will unfortunately avoid any audiobook in the future with this narrator!

Struggled

I struggled to enjoy for the same reasons everyone else seems to have, the narrator detracted from the book because of his odd manner of narration. Strange and leaves you feeling disconnected from the book.

Ok story, terrible narration.

If you dont really know how to read, respecting that commas and full stops signify pauses, then please do not narrate audiobooks. The narrator of this title pauses at random times, accentuating words that require no need for this, resulting in a stunted performance that is frustrating to listen to and make sense of. The narration ruined the story for me.

Major let down to the point of almost contacting Audible and asking for my credit back.
