Just what I needed!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. So often in PA books the hero is perfect at everything. That gets a little old after awhile. The "hero" in this book wasn't perfect, he was a flawed man doing the best he could under the circumstances. His flaw made him more real to me and you will find Devil Dog to be a guy that you are cheering for.

My complaint is one I often make with books under 10 hours - it was too short! As a avid reader/listener I can fly through books like this - especially ones that I lose myself in. I was provided this book in exchange for a review. Mr. Craven if you see this, thanks for the listen, great book BUT please write longer ones so I can get a few more hours of enjoyment please!!

Too much unnecessary profanity

I enjoyed the basic idea of this book and enjoyed The narration – although character performance would have been nice – but why all of the gratuitous and excessive profanity? Guess some people think that's necessary to be cool. How very sad ...

Action Suspense and the Apocalypse

I really enjoyed this story! Alas, it has no zombies, an EMP has brought the world as we know it to a sudden stop. It's how one man copes with his changed world. It well written and narrated and this book could definitely become a series. Bonus? The story gave great survival tips, what more could you ask for?

What was one of the most memorable moments of Devil Dog?

I dont recall a specific moment or moments. The story is rather unique in the post-apocalyptic genre. Kevin Pierce is a great choice in narrator for this story.

What does Kevin Pierce bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

A good narrator is always the difference between a good and bad listening experience. In this example, Kevin Pierce was a good choice.

Any additional comments?

This story is overall really good. Most authors chose to use either a law enforcement or military background as their primary character. Many times that idea can be over played, but in this case, the author sets up the story differently. As the story continues in the subsequent continuations, its a very compelling story. This story has a very down to earth feel to it. I'm very happy with this story and I have enjoyed the continuations and look forward to the story continuing.

great story, the narration was spot on and the characters were brought to life by the parts they portrayed....hopefully there is a book 2

Kevin always gives a rock solid performance to the extent that I look for books that he's narrated.

Devil Dog is a good spin on an EMP survival story. The deeply flawed hero is an addict and a broken person, but is a survivor. While he struggles with flashbacks, delusions and guilt, he manages to save a good number of the weak and helpless. The author does a good job of portraying a man in conflict trying to make sense of a shattered world. There is no shying away from bad situations and real danger and harm to all the characters. This adds a dimension of realism that keeps this from being another ex-military superhero story.
The book ends with a nice resolution to the storyline and a clean setup for a sequel. I'm looking forward to seeing where the story goes from here.

great short book

quick paced book. Good, realistic, funny, sad, and to the point. cost was a little high for such a short book but I have no regrets and I'll buy the next book too.

The main character Dick A.K.A the Devil Dog. I found that some of the most emotional scenes of the book were the parts when he kept mistaking people for his wife and daughter.

Interesting attempt, but boring story

What did you like best about Devil Dog? What did you like least?

This audiobook was given to me at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review, thanks Audiobook Boom.As an avid listener of post-apocalyptic and prepper novels, there are a few steady tropes that are typical (e.g. society breakdown, journey home, defeating the liberals) and most have the event happen and track their journey. What was nice in a sort of "Book of Eli" style, the protagonist was already in the middle of this so how everything happened could be revealed and flashed back which is good. But the premise of him being homeless and creating a great underground world of misfit children was a stretch. The whole journey of him finding his daughter is a bit overplayed in stories and seemed to distract from the core purpose of the character. I would hope that as the story evolves there is a broader set of characters so the storylines diverge and become more rich with time. Also, flashing back to his years and how he became like this with specific trigger events will help humanize the character more. Lastly, it was good that Kevin Pierce narrated. He has done many books in the genre and is familiar and really good with these stories.

another disappointing book in this genre

If ever Disney wanted to make a post apocalyptic dystopian movie, here it is. Or maybe the author started with the plot to an existing Disney movie, changed the characters from mice and cats to good humans and bad humans, threw in a few curse words, and gave them guns. To me, this book is very much like a lot of the books in this genre I have tried to read lately. Maybe I have just had a bad run of luck, but they seem to be more and more superficial with juvenile plots and stereotypical, predictable, shallow characters, with some thinly disguised political statements, religion, and other stuff thrown in for good measure. I read these books for the same reason I read old westerns and scifi, fun and escapism. If I want reality or politics, religion and moralizing I can watch cable tv. Or, maybe queue up an old Disney movie. As another reviewer pointed out, the editing is also kind of sloppy, but mostly little stuff. A former marine would never, ever refer to himself as a soldier for example, but I can live with those kinds of issues as long as they do not violate physics, space, time and basic reality.
