Despair Will Ensue

The calculated positivity of this book could have been uplifting, and indeed starts off this way, but its unrelenting sing-song happiness is nauseating.

The author's philosophy seems to be that 'negative' emotion such as anger, fear, or anxiety serve no useful purpose, so airbrush them from life. With the exception of the opening scene and a cliche 'baddie', even the most buoyant reader will drown in the saccharine, hyperbolic prose.

Given the range of accents demanded by the plethora of characters in the story, many apparently serving no other purpose than to add diversity, the publishers could have eased the torment by finding a narrator capable of a range of voices. Instead, the accents are excruciatingly poor.

In sum, this is a badly-narrated tale devoid of subtlety or nuance. The storyline is tedious and predictable. It is rare for me to give up on a story, even one that is not particularly well-written, but I gladly made an exception in this case.
