From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Orphan Train, and the critically acclaimed author of Bird in Hand and The Way Life Should Be, comes a novel about friendship and the memories that haunt us—includes a special PS section featuring insights, interviews, and more.

On the night of her high school graduation, Kathryn Campbell sits around a bonfire with her four closest friends, including the beautiful but erratic Jennifer. “I’ll be fine,” Jennifer says, as she walks away from the dying embers and towards the darkness of the woods. She never came back.

Ten years later, Kathryn has tried to build a life for herself, with a marriage and a career as a journalist, but she still feels the conspicuous void of Jennifer’s disappearance. When her divorce sends her reeling back to the Maine town where she grew up, she finds herself plunged into a sea of memories. With nothing left to lose, she is determined to answer one simple question: What ever happened to Jennifer Pelletier?

Enjoyable but not up to the standard of “Orphan Train”. No real twists or surprises. Strong narrator

A little predictable

I was so excited about this book since Orphan Train is one of my all time favorites. I was hooked at the beginning, but by the end I just wanted it to be over so I could know what happened and move on to another great read. I didn't find any of the characters lovable and the ending was predictable.

Promising beginning, fizzled out at the end

It seemed too obvious who was responsible for Jennifer's death from the beginning. Though you didn't know the name, the character reference was enough.

Not enough suspense

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The narrator was superb and of course I truly love this writer

the strongest objection seem to be to the narrator. I managed to listen to it all. some of the voices were off-putting. the narrator needs to work on her female voices and her male ones.

the storyline became very tedious. I felt that it was all pretty muddy and unnecessary. just not as well developed as I think this author is capable of

not as good as her others
