Publisher's summary

Award-winning author C.S.E. Cooney indulges in luxurious, dizzying fantasy

In Desdemona and the Deep, the spoiled daughter of a rich mining family must retrieve the tithe of men her father promised to the world below. On the surface, her world is rife with industrial pollution that ruins the health of poor factory workers while the idle rich indulge themselves in unheard-of luxury. Below are goblins, mysterious kingdoms, and an entirely different hierarchy.

Most excellent

This was my second C.S.E. Cooney book (the first being Saint Death’s Daughter - which I absolutely adored!)

I am in love with this author’s world building. just incredible. I look forward to reading more!

Entertaining and Engaging

I really enjoyed the book. My problem with many fantasy stories is that it seems the authors are in a competition to see how long and complicated they can make their books (series of books). Cooney weaves a tail that is certainly complex, but briskly takes the reader along without muddying the story with garnishment that it doesn't need.

Masterful!!!!

have you ever read a book and thought, "this should be on the stage?" that is what Desdemona and the Deep is. Part novel, Part astonishing performance. CSE Cooneys books are meant to be read aloud, and enjoyed by all.

Standing O

I've become a big fat C.S.E. Cooney fan. It took me a while to get into Bone Swans, but when I did I fell hard. So I wasn't worried when it took, oh, just a few minutes of listening before I fell just as hard for Desdemona and friends. This is just delicious writing. Fairy tale settings, mythical creatures, everything sprinkled with enchantment and wicked laughter. I especially love that she narrates her own audio books, because she's really good at it and you don't get any of the awkward inflections that even the best narrators stumble over when they're reading someone else's stuff.
I think I'm gonna buy her books in paper too. She's that good that I want both.

Delightful. :-)

Delightful to read an imperious protagonist who is still sympathetic. To find all the shades of Faerie from Irish legend through the 17th century and into modern retellings. To see and be seen among the characters. And to hear: "We'll turn all these walls into doors."

Delicious, Dazzling storytelling with a heart of gold…

CSE Cooney’s brilliant performance of this magnificent world drips with honey-crusted phrases, sizzling ideas, characters who live, love and learn- and language that makes the listener fall in love with English. A stunning rendition of an exquisitely beautiful book.

A wordsmith of the highest quality

C.S.E. Cooney has done it again. She sucks you into a world of magic and creates characters so real you would swear you could meet them in this world.

To hear her read her work was a true treat. She has a fantastic theatrical voice that brings each facet of her universe into stunning clarity.

I never thought I’d say it, but I want to be a goblin now.

Definitely lived up to the hype

I kept hearing about this book and I thought I'd give it a try.
That was such a good decision. The story surprised me but never in a negative way. I'm really looking forward to more work by this author. What an interesting take on old stories. What a fresh and loving portrayal of marginalized people. What a compelling redemption arc. I loved it, I really did. I'm sad that it is over.
