Publisher's summary

Fifty years ago, Mira, humanity's last hope to find new resources, exited the solar system bound for Proxima Centauri B. Seven years into her mission, all transmissions ceased without warning. Mira and her crew were presumed lost. Humanity, unified during her construction, splintered into insurgency and rebellion.

Now, an outpost orbiting Pluto has detected a distress call from an unpowered object entering Sol space: Mira has returned. When all attempts at communications fail, a search and rescue vessel is dispatched from Trident Station to intercept, investigate, and tow the beleaguered Mira to Neptune.

As the marines prepare for the journey, uncertainty and conspiracy fomented by Trident Station's governing AIs, begin to take their toll. Upon reaching Mira, they discover they've been sent on a mission that will almost certainly end in catastrophe.

The Derelict saga is a suspenseful mashup of hard military sci-fi, space opera, and mystery.

Some mysteries shouldn't be solved.

Tension Builds Steadily... Mira Approaches

STORY: I was impressed with Paul E. Cooley's venture into deep space with this first book in the Derelict series. A massive exo-solar exploration ship, missing for forty-three years, returns as an out of control derelict. The Sol Federation Marines of S&R Black are thrown into the breach to recover everything they can with very little preparation. A handful of marines to stop the largest ship ever built, complacent from constant training and boredom at Neptune station, they must quickly gel as a team to confront the unknown.

Arriving at the derelict, the recovery will not be as simple as their orders implied. Artificial Intelligence systems are used in station and shipboard to "assist" with the recovery. Or?

NARRATION: Mr. Cooley narrates his own book as comfortably as if I were reading it myself. He knows how expressive he wants each character to be. His voice range provides a distinction between each character that is pleasing to the ear.

Will be looking out for book 2!

Sci Fi Military Procedure at its most efficient. .

If reality tv and court tv joined the space marines, this woukd be it.Mediocre reports of an extraordinary event, kept quiet by a military alliance. The characters are what make this book pop to life, with the authors narrative covering each snark, grunt and expletive to a proper level.Ive read Cooley's other books and he definitely connects previous stories with a clever thread of canonical background.

Good story so far

I liked it. Interesting universe and vision of the future. I found that the book went by rather fast.

Fun book!

The right level of character development, space Marines and geek for a great story! And of course a cliffhanger on the way to the next book.

Entertaining

The book started off slow but ended up catching my attention. Going to listen to the second book now.

Slow

this part of the story is slow and a little boring. I love his books so I am sure the second part will be more interesting.

Missing a resolution

While the story was well written the overall planning ad plotting left much to be desired. I realize that this is the first novel in the series However, in writing a series the author should incapsulate all the elements of the story segment. Each book should be able to stand on its own. While I greatly enjoyed the book I did not think there was an adequate ending.

Good but a little slow

I realize this book was the setup where we get introduced to the world and characters and I did get to like the characters and the world by and large but still nothing particularly happens until the final few pages. Could’ve used a little more excitement I’m on to the next one tho since I want to know what happens!

Annoying female lead with lots of filler material

This would have been a 5 star book if the story line had been fully wrapped up in one book, as opposed to being a cliffhanger. As it is, I probably won't be buying the 2nd book.

The story did have a really good "hook" in that I really wanted to know what happened to the Mira, and the anticipation kept me listening. But there was just too much filler material that wasn't needed and it felt like drudgery at times working through all of the mundane details of "ship training". In the end, I REALLY wanted it to be over because I didn't care for the characters and the female lead was just plain annoying (the narrator did a good job overall, but his intonation of the female characters really made me dislike them).
