Der ewige Student Fritz Degenfeld, genannt der ‚blaurote Methusalem‘, sein Leibdiener Gottfried Ziegenkopf, scherzhaft Gottfried von Bouillon gerufen, und Richard Stein, der jugendliche Schützling des ‚Methusalem‘, machen sich auf den Weg nach China, um dort eine Richard in Aussicht gestellte, geheimnisvolle Erbschaft anzutreten. Zugleich wollen sie auch nach der verschollenen Familie ihres im deutschen Exil lebenden chinesischen Freundes Ye-kin-li forschen. Unterwegs stoßen noch der alte Seebär Kapitän Turnerstick und der wunderliche Holländer Willem van Ardappelen-bosch zu der bunten Truppe, die auf ihrer Reise prompt von einem – mal gefährlichen, mal aberwitzig komischen – Abenteuer in das nächste gerät.

The reading was excellent. Listening to the story now, made me uncomfordable with some of the racist descriptions, but I must consider the time it was written. And thinking back, growing up with Karl May as a teenager, I am surprised really how tolerant all his stories made me. They encouraged me to travel and look at the world from different viewpoints. The stories make it so clear that our own customs and solutions are not necessarily the only ones, or even the only right ones. Karl May teaches respect for other peoples and cultures. I can't wait to relisten to all the stories again.
