November 1918: endlich Frieden. Ein paar junge deutsche Frontsoldaten treten den Rückzug in die Heimat an. In Deutschland tobt die Revolution, von der Begeisterung, mit der man sie vor Jahren in den Kampf fürs Vaterland schickte, ist nichts geblieben. Stattdessen werden sie mit Gleichgültigkeit oder offener Verachtung konfrontiert. Der Weg zurück ist die konsequente Fortsetzung des von Millionen gelesenen Klassikers Im Westen nichts Neues. Zum hundertsten Jahrestag des Kriegsausbruchs 1914 erscheint es erstmals seit der Erstpublikation 1931 in der Fassung der Originalausgabe – versehen mit einem Anhang und einem umfassenden Nachwort des Herausgebers Thomas F. Schneider, dem Leiter des Erich Maria Remarque-Friedenszentrums an der Universität Osnabrück.
