Der junge Unteroffizier Wildebrandt liebt Anna, die Tochter des ehemaligen Husarenwachtmeisters Pappermann aus Stolp. Doch diese soll den Kaufmann Hiller heiraten, der seinem Schwiegervater als Brautpreis einen Apfelschimmel versprochen hat. Der Leutnant Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher greift ein und besorgt Wildebrandt einen Schimmel, dem allerlei Tricks beigebracht wurden. Danach provoziert er Hiller solange, bis dieser ihn zum Duell fordert, das Hiller zwar unverletzt, aber ohnmächtig übersteht. Anschließend "duelliert" sich Blücher auch mit Pappermann selbst, wobei dieser gezwungen wird, Anna dem jungen Wildebrandt zur Frau zu geben. Kaufmann Hiller muss ebenfalls verzichten und bekommt zum Trost Blüchers Wirtin, Jungfer Adelheid.
